In order to get the best sound out of earlier generation digital boxes, I found the Ariane was highly necessary to get them to a point where there was any song-to-song consistency. Early digital AGC’s were a mess.

I’ve only used the analog Ariane. Although I’m sure you would be impressed with either their analog or digital offering.

….and you, my friend, should be very proud of BBP…and especially challenger…I can’t imagine how much work went into it.

I agree, a good stereo enhancer for broadcast should do nothing to mono material.

A matrix processor like the Ariane, will sit there and do absolutely nothing to the L-R if the material is mono, just as it should.

In spite of my love for Plutonium, I sometimes take a less is more approach to processing, depending on the format.

(Plutonium sounds fantastic dialed back…I just like it’s overall spectral balance song-to-song)

I’ve found that backing off the stereo enhancer a bit from where it sits on first load is appropriate for my taste. On FM, anyway.

IMHO, I tend to prefer the Space EFX setting on an Omnia 6exi at or around 4 or 5, but I prefer subtle stereo enhancement.

    FWIW

Is the crackling on peaks in the music? What’s your system CPU/processor usage? Is breakaway changing colors (turning red) on instantaneous peaks? Might be as simple as installing the -6 attenuator in breakaway (free plugin).

I’d like to demo Breakaway Live….LIVE on our stream…what’s the demo "nag" or limitation? I didn’t hear an announcement like in the Breakaway Broadcast demo that I had, before buying a key.

I just set it up using our existing SOS encoder. "That was easy"

    Yeah,

Ando’s pricing structure is robbery. We like it, though.

As I recall, the Aphex2020’s insert points was not post-multiband…it might have been post-wideband agc, so if you had something like a Dolby SR unit that you wanted to insert, it really didn’t work optimally.

I understand folks wanting to get a signature sound, but clean, loud, and as close as possible to the original material while maintaining a fair degree of song-to-song spectral balance has always been my goal…and for that…I think BB is truly an unbelievable product and I wouldn’t dream of putting anything in front of it.

I’ll guess and say they’re also using an Ariane, just a stab in the dark on that, I’d heard that they were rather popular in France back 6-7 years ago.

Please allow me to just keep encouraging you…keep upping the processing ante. You’re doing a fine job so far!

I played my Kate Bush remix of Running Up That Hill and a few other vinyl goodies I have though Breakaway’s Plutonium preset, and the sound blew me away. It handled the occasional vinyl pop better than any processor I’ve *EVER HEARD*.

Yeah, to fix that, I control the input to BB, by turning down the wave output within the windows mixer, adjusting down the breakaway 1 pipeline, which is how I port the audio from winamp to bb. I like that preset on 70’s/80’s stuff.

If I’m processing today’s stuff, and competing against an Omnia…I just turn the bass drive down a little bit and crank up the final drive…using the same preset. I might switch to Plutonium instead of Plutonium NR.

Dang, I cannot wait to have a full control version. When it’s for sale, I’m buying.

A friend of mine has a new tool from a company called Microgen…it’s a usb device that simultaneously monitors every FM station on the dial: reads the rds, deviation, features l-r graphics imaging…scope, etc, its nuts! Anyway he hadn’t heard breakaway yet, he’s got a killer soundsystem…so we sat and played lots of stuff and were able to race a couple stations…

We ended up using a newer exciter that gave us much better peak control…and sounded cleaner.

This preset literally blew us away today:

    Plutionium NR
    +.2
    50
    45
    50
    Normal Bass
    -13 bass shape

    bass efx plug in: 2
    impact/clunk: slam 2, clunk 2

    Crazy crazy crazy sound.
