    Hi Pavaronnie!

Effects must be before the processor, because they would ruin peak control and cause overshoots in the previously tightly controlled signal, which must then be limited or clipped, causing extra distortion for no benefit.

The processor does counter-act EQ, but not all that much. Turn the EQ up a little more for the desired effect.

No chance, Matt. The filter in BBP is phase linear — 30 Hz is as long filter as I can fit in a 16384 FFT. 20 Hz would require going to filter length 32768, and this alone, with windowing, will ADD a full second of latency.

Thanks for the Bug Report! 🙂 Will fix it.

    Hi Pavaronnie!

Okay, I’ve played the original track through BBP with your settings, and I must say, to my ears this is way over the top. It’s too much processing, too much clipping, too much everything — except for dynamics and headroom, of which there isn’t enough.

It sounds much better at Final Drive 0, Bass Boost off.

The answer to what’s going on is apparent if you look at the oscilloscope.

Using Final Drive +0.0 and Bass Boost off, the waveform is already looking like this:

My question to you is, where exactly would do you want the processor to put the extra loudness AND bass you’re asking for with Final Drive +1.5 and Bass Boost +15? 🙂

What you’re hearing is probably the Adaptive Bass Clipper desperately trying to avoid audible distortion, which is with all certainty present on the stations you’re comparing to. If you don’t mind audible distortion but really want more bass, you might want to try the Twente preset in the latest version, which actually disables the adaptive bass clipper, for more bass at the expense of the possibility of distortion during heavy bass.

    Best regards,

    Hi Pavaronnie!

Thank you for the screenshots, but you missed the one thing that may give a clue to what’s going on. Please resize the window so that you see the oscilloscope, and take some new screenshots, and let’s see what they look like.

    Best,

Heh.. Of course, the one time I leave without waiting for the transfer to finish, it fails halfway through!
    Now uploading again.

Oops! That’s what I get for not testing with L/R output enabled.

I have fixed it, and the new version is up.

Thank you for bringing it to my attention!

Cyborg, by "Breakaway Personal" I meant "Breakaway Audio Enhancer" — the version that started it all, and is still just $30.

Since it’s a consumer product designed for listening and not broadcasting, it has a few limitations, for example audio can only come from Breakaway Pipeline 1 (not a sound card), and audio can only go to a sound card (not a virtual cable). It also does not have phase linear mode, no final drive control, no plug-in support. On the other hand, it’s the same great sounding Breakaway multiband processing as in the pro products, it’s light-weight, easy to use, and extremely inexpensive!

In fact, on my single core atom netbook, it uses only 15% with the Reference Low CPU preset, and 30% with FM mode with a normal preset. That’s low enough that the netbook can still play movies smoothly while doing the processing and feeding a pocket transmitter.

I don’t know about you, but I sure can’t live without it! 🙂

It’s supposed to store the settings about 10 seconds after you adjust a control, but I may have broken something! I’ll look into it.

    Hi Francois!

Thank you very much for your comments! You’re right, we do need to advertise more. I’m currently working on getting Breakaway Audio Enhancer ready for Windows 7 — once that’s done, we’ll make sure to make ourselves heard 🙂.

Hey, since you work at a radio station, you might want to look at Breakaway Broadcast Processor. It’s a real FM processor in software, and has a much more advanced clipper back-end than state of the art hardware processors, so it actually sounds a lot cleaner, brighter and more listenable on the air, while controlling peaks and preventing overmodulation as well as the best hardware processors.

    Best regards,

    Hi Timmy!

Outside of FM mode, audio quality is 100% like it has always been 😉. So, no benefit in that case.

You can run the encoders as plug-ins, and use a separate plug-in for each stream.

Place the MP3 encoder first in the plug-in chain, then an attenuation plug-in from http://www.ceaudio.com/plugins and finally the AAC encoder.

    Hi Francesco!

This definitely sounds like a bug.
Could you try the following newer version instead and see if it still has the same problem?

    http://bredband.leif.cx/browse/balive/

Right now I am working on many different things with the different Breakaway versions, that’s why I haven’t publically released a new version for a while.

    1.20.25 -> 1.20.26:

FM mode audio quality improvements — much better bass, better level consistency between different presets. Also slightly lower cpu usage and lower latency 🙂.

Custom cursors removed. I guess I don’t miss them. How about you?

CPU usage figures for Breakaway Audio Enhancer: (Windows XP, Atom N280 Netbook, Main window small enough to only show controls):

Reference Low CPU, Normal mode: 11%
Reference Low CPU, FM Mode: 30%

    Helix, Normal mode: 18%
    Helix, FM mode: 37%
