KeymasterGreat suggestions so far! Keep’em coming 😉.

KeymasterThe VAC author has *finally* reproduced the long-standing vac issue. Perhaps a solution on the horizon.

KeymasterMPX input is not special, MPX input is standard for professional transmitters. Only consumer grade transmitters have L/R input as the only input.
However, if you’re not broadcasting on FM, indeed it doesn’t matter at all 🙂.

KeymasterMan, I’m not sure I have that one.
I have:
01. Lola’s Theme (Radio Edit) 03:27
02. Lola’s Theme (Main Mix) 08:13
03. Lola’s Theme (Extended Vocal Mix) 06:55
04. Lola’s Theme (Eric Prydz Mix) 08:04
05. Lola’s Theme (Calderone Vocal Mix) 10:28Is it one of those?
Feel free to send me a clip otherwise.

November 7, 2009 at 12:41 am in reply to: Request help with settings – Broadcast Trial has crackling #8902Leif
KeymasterHi Kevin!
I’m guessing the crackling is coming from CPU overload. However…
OK, what I’m about to tell you is probably the worst business decision ever, but with that transmitter, you actually don’t need Breakaway Broadcast. You’re not using BBP’s stereo encoder, all you really need is proper pre-emphasis peak limiting for FM.
Breakaway Audio Enhancer for $29.95, in FM Mode, will actually do the job. The version with FM Mode is new, not officially released yet, but a beta is available here:
viewtopic.php?f=2&t=740To clarify what the FM mode in BAE does:
It applies pre-emphasis, runs a low-cpu low latency advanced distortion cancelled clipper, and then applies de-emphasis and outputs the audio in L/R form. It does not contain a stereo encoder.
This will not yield perfect peak control on the air, but it will will usually get by with less than 20% overshoot on the air, which is very nice compared to the 300% overshoot you have if you run a transmitter with a non-fm processor. For a 100mW transmitter, a 10% or 20% overshoot does not matter in the slightest, and thus the FM mode will do it. It’s like this feature was designed for you, Kevin 😉.I myself use BAE FM mode in my netbook (30% cpu usage on an atom cpu!) when I’m away from home. With a tiny little transmitter, i get close to broadcast quality and low enough latency to, say, watch a movie with the audio coming out of a nearby radio, instead of the horrendous netbook speakers. Works well for playing music in rental cars too 😉.
Anyone with a professional transmitter (MPX input, higher power), however, still needs BBP.

KeymasterMan, that’s no good. I’ll test your scenario myself and see if I can reproduce it.

KeymasterNo problem. Sorry I couldn’t be of more help.

KeymasterRuran, I’m afraid I don’t have an answer at the moment. It works on every 64-bit machine I’ve tried it on, and without having it fail in front of me, I don’t know where to even begin looking. I will make a note of the issue and do my best to reproduce / solve it in the future.
You could also try to install Breakaway Broadcast or Breakaway Live and see if it has the same issue.
One more thing — open Device Manager and look at Sound, video and game controllers. Do you see Breakaway Pipeline, or any unknown devices in there?

KeymasterHi Ruran!
I just tried it again on a fresh Windows 7 64-bit machine, and it worked perfectly for me.
Where are things going wrong?
For example, are you getting the following prompt:

If so, what are you answering? If not, have you made any changes to the system driver policy?
Best regards,
///LeifLeif
KeymasterHi Ruran!
Windows 64-bit is supported in Breakaway, and has been supported ever since the first version. I’m not sure what’s going wrong yet, but before we go further into troubleshooting, could you try the latest beta version?
I’ve made many other Windows 7-related compatibility improvements, so it’s definitely worth trying.

KeymasterIndeed. One reason for why it’s not, is that the not all affiliates have processors 😉.
Loudness has been a huge issue in DTV. We’ve solved it in a lot of places, but we’re not done yet.

KeymasterAdam, I have actually thought about this — perhaps 1 slider for the AGC speed, and 2 for multiband attack/release. However, the way my schedule is looking the next few months, it’s too early to even think about it. Adding controls is not just a cost vs value or support issue, it’s also very tricky to implement. New controls in the main window is very complicated, as it means the whole layout engine must be tweaked. New controls in the settings window would be easy, but it would also mean the preset controls would no longer all be in one place — a disaster for usability, so it’s not really an option for this type of setting.
Hey, this may actually call for another preset, or perhaps call for a modification to the Rock preset. There’s still a couple of weak ones in the lineup which could be removed to make room for new and improved presets.
I have yet to experience what you mention as a problem, but that probably just means that my ears aren’t attuned to this sort of issue yet. My ears get increasingly critical every day (it’s a curse), so if you have some audio clips where this happens, I’d be happy to check it out.

Keymaster
(a) because ESI Juli@ had balanced and un-balanced I/O connectors (but cannot used simultaneously); which one do you prefer?
Actually, they can. I tried it, was very surprised that it worked, but it did.
(b) if I want use balanced input, but need un-balanced for MPX output (because almost all FM Exciter use un-balanced MPX input); how can I do that?
By running the MPX cable into the computer through a convenient hole, and connecting it to the unbalanced output inside the computer.

Do you consistently see the same thing? What CPU do you have?///Leif

KeymasterAdam, dialnorm is outside of the scope of Breakaway.
I can however recommend Linear Acoustic’s products! Our products solve exactly the kind of projects the network is facing, and many more. We’ve been building DTV-related audio products since 2002, and our products are already in use at many national networks in the US.
Best,
