Hi.. First of all, great program!
I have a question..
On the bass kick, for the first couple of seconds there is what sounds like bass clipping distortion, until the processor adapts. I am using BBP 0.90.80 with Plutonium, final drive backed off to -1dB, auto balance plugin and stereo enhancer. I thought about updating to 0.90.87 but I have read some people are having CPU usage issues, and I’m already at 70%.
Please let me know your thoughts.
Thanks
Steve
November 2, 2009 at 3:55 pm #8855LeifKeymasterHi Steve!
I am very familiar with this phenomenon as something very typical of for example the 8200, but to be honest I’ve never noticed Breakaway do it. Do you have a good song example?

At the time I heard it, Shapeshifters – Lola’s Theme was playing.

November 4, 2009 at 9:50 am #8858lpy7MemberHey Leif,
This is similar to what I mentioned a while ago about Volume Logic (sorry to mention that again 😛) being able to handle the bass excellent but BBP/BA Live being slightly different.
Basically, find a part of a song with no bass for around 10-15 seconds. When the bass kicks in, it will be loud (and possibly distorted-sounding) until the AGC settles.
The only workaround I’ve found is to increase the Speed control. It does it on virtually any preset, although Reference is fine with Speed on 50 until you start increasing the Bass Boost to 10+.
Plutonium does it with the default settings unless you increase the Speed to around 60 and/or turn down the Bass Boost slightly.
As an aside, I’ve been able to pick a few streams that use Breakaway simply by hearing the effect it has on the bass.
Hope that helps.
November 7, 2009 at 1:48 pm #8859Energy RadioMemberHi Leif,
It was the vocal club mix I do believe. Also does it on a similar sounding commercial house track, but at the moment I can’t remember the name of it. I think it was from a Hed Kandi Mix. I guess any digital clipping from CD mixes doesn’t help things much either. If I manage to remember the track name I will post it up. Thanks again for your help.
November 7, 2009 at 3:33 pm #8860LeifKeymasterMan, I’m not sure I have that one.
I have:
01. Lola’s Theme (Radio Edit) 03:27
02. Lola’s Theme (Main Mix) 08:13
03. Lola’s Theme (Extended Vocal Mix) 06:55
04. Lola’s Theme (Eric Prydz Mix) 08:04
05. Lola’s Theme (Calderone Vocal Mix) 10:28Is it one of those?
Feel free to send me a clip otherwise.

November 7, 2009 at 5:18 pm #8861michi95MemberWhile using the BA Live trial version (90.83 ?) I have noticed this distortion too with Plutonium and some other presets.
Leif try these:
The Beatmasters – Ska Train (album version or radio edit)
Genesis – Tonight, Tonight, Tonight (album version)November 7, 2009 at 5:50 pm #8862Lee XSMemberI am still trying to replicate this also….
November 8, 2009 at 1:14 am #8863LeifKeymasterGuys, I really need more specific information. For example, exact song (including what version) and a timestamp, along with a description of exactly what happens at that timestamp.
I know the processor isn’t going to cause the issue throughout the whole song, or I would probably have noticed it already 🙂.
Best,
///LeifNovember 8, 2009 at 1:33 pm #8864Energy RadioMemberHi Leif,
It was the extended vocal mix. I’m waiting to hear the other song again on our playlist loop, but I did notice another one last night, Weekend Players – Jericho – right at the start, first few seconds when the sub bass kicks in.
edit: Oh and btw, I’m now using Zenith, final drive +1, range 80, power 46, speed 51, bass boost +9, bass shape 0.

November 9, 2009 at 2:24 am #8867LeifKeymasterOK, I listened to the Genesis cut, and you know, I didn’t think Plutonium did badly at all!
I mean really, when I hear the term bass kick distortion, this is what I think about:
Example above is Sash – La Primavera. 8200 setting is Rock-Dense 9.0.
With regards to Genesis, I do see what you mean about the kick not being as punchy as it could be. Indeed, plutonium is a compromise to avoid bass/mid intermodulation in extremely bass heavy content, so that it can also handle Urban as well as Electronic music. It uses the Adaptive Bass Clipper which dynamically varies the bass clip threshold to prevent bass from interfering with the high-end.
There are presets that do not use this feature though, and Twente is one of them! Twente is in fact based on Plutonium, and the biggest change is that this feature is turned off. Here’s a couple of clips to compare:
genesis-bbp-plutonium
genesis-bbp-twenteIs this what you had in mind?
Twente is also slightly less aggressive than Plutonium at stock settings, which helps greatly to maintain punch. Remember, once you’re at 100% modulation, there’s nowhere else to go. Pay attention to the oscilloscope! If you’re lacking punch, ask yourself — where would you like the processor to put it?
Best,

I agree with you that Twente is less aggressive.
Plutonium creates a loss of definition.
I think (it sounds) as if Plutonium runs in trouble especially if there is much FX like reverbs and/or delays.
Personally, I would not use either Plutonium or Twente with default settings (but this would be a discussion of subjective taste – so please ignore this statement).Back on topic:
I have tried to recreate your samples.
You have named these MP3s "WAV".
320 kbps, ok.
But you must have used some kind of bandwith limitation and low-pass roll-off (plus NR ?) !?
I have done frequency/spectral analysis/comparison with your samples and with my own WAVs.
I don’t know if I should show these spectral waveform analysis examples (CE 2.1) here ?These WAVs (processed with Plutonium and Twente with default settings but without any bandwith limitation and low-pass roll-off) have a really aggressive spectral structure (much more than your samples). 😥
So what were your bandwith limitation settings ?The problem:
Out of the box (after Breakaway installation) there is no bandwith limitation applied.
Listen to the WAV output with Plutonium (default settings) is more or less very frustating (if you use good quality monitoring system).
With limited (PC, mobile or whatever) speakers it could be benefit.Personally, I would (if I had no other choice of processing) use Twente with range and power (even speed) at zero or at the maximum 25, but this would be another discussion of subjective taste and personal conceptions of music – I’m a musician – so please ignore this statement, too.
