    Hi Cleiton!

    I’m sorry, I didn’t see the question before 🙂.

It’s beta. I’m still adding new features.

Thanks 🙂. After so many years working hard to design a processor that does what it does without ever audibly pumping, I would never have guessed that I would actually enjoy a preset that intentionally pumps! It’s addictive, somehow.

French Kiss uses a wideband compressor before the multiband to allow the kick drums of dance music to slightly punch holes into the mix, which (counter-intuitively) actually gives the bass a clear, clean quality, and somehow opens up the whole mix, especially in the Broadcast version when pushing for loudness.

What does everyone else think? 🙂

    Hi Sparky!

C-QUAM pretty much did — I wouldn’t know where to buy a receiver either. (It’s a shame, it was such a neat system, and sounded great for AM!)

However, it was pretty easy to add support for Mid/Side stereo, and it was fun, so I figure if it generates even a single extra sale, it was worth the time. 🙂

    Hi Luk!

I will make it as soon as Breakaway Broadcast is done. It’ll cost $129, and of course we can make you a good upgrade deal. 🙂

Lane, the mac version for iTunes will happen at some point — but it’s out of my hands. The guy who is porting it had some serious health trouble, but will hopefully get back to work on it. Not much more I can do…

RRRprod, porting Breakaway FM doesn’t make sense — it’s really designed to run as a standalone processor in its own machine, so if you’re buying a machine to run it on, buy one that it does run on 😉. Rackmount servers work well, and if you want something portable for DJ use, try a Shuttle XPC mini system — they work great, look great, and they’re tiny. The official recommended operating system for a standalone dedicated machine is Windows 2000, but it will of course run fine in XP and 2003 as well. I would not recommend Vista on a standalone machine, for performance and reliability reasons.

    Hi Luk!

Breakaway Personal isn’t for webcasting. That’s why the price tag is so ridiculously low!

I recommend you wait for Breakaway Live — it will have the plutonium preset, and webcasting will be fully supported.

Alright, we’ll add it to my list of things to do, expect it done some time around 2015 🙂.

Thank you everyone for your comments!

You’re right — Breakaway Broadcast Processor is a long name.. But, it also describes exactly what it is, and that is also important for a new product. This is also why Breakaway Personal (or Home Edition) isn’t a good name until you already know what it is, and the reason why we had to go with Breakaway Audio Enhancer.

I thought about Breakaway DJ before, but it implies that it’s doing more than it is, such as allowing you to mix etc.. Although I do have a version which might be appropriate for that name. It’s a Breakaway ASIO Driver (no, that’s not a typo — it’s a DRIVER), which allows you to hook up your DJ software (say, Traktor) to it, and it will process three stereo pairs separately, and send them along to a 5.1 Kernel Streaming device (i.e. onboard audio or standard consumer sound card) with low enough latency to be usable. It’s essentially like ASIO4ALL with Breakaway built in, except of course I wrote it from scratch, it’s not based on ASIO4ALL.

The good thing is that the last word in Breakaway Broadcast Processor CAN be left off at will. In fact I have, whenever there wasn’t room for it, such as in menus on the new web site I’m in the middle of developing, and in the filenames etc.. But the logo says Breakaway Broadcast Processor. It can also be shortened to BBP of course 🙂.

By the way — the first BBP beta is available!

Also a big new convenience feature: Sliders are now saved per preset! Makes it much easier to compare presets and keep track of things.

Same old URL – http://bredband.leif.cx/browse/bafm – but the new official site is only days away!

Good point, lpy. I guess you’ll have to decide if Breakaway Live (formerly ba web) sounds better when it comes out — it has no bandwidth limitation at all, it goes all the way to nyquist.

Also, more advanced versions of Breakaway Broadcast Processor (formerly bafm) will have higher settings as well, probably all the way up to 18k.

    Best regards,

I can think of three more things – DRM (Digital Radio Mondiale), HD radio, and DAB. Breakaway Hexcaster 🙂.

Hexcaster, sounds like it could be useful to throw an evil spell on someone you don’t like 😉.

I know what you mean, lpy.

    I must clarify though:

When I say "Breakaway FM is louder than Breakaway Web" I don’t just mean that it’s louder.. I mean, any idiot can make it loud, just crank it up more! Normalize to 200%, it’ll be even louder 😉.

What I really mean is, Breakaway FM is louder at the same peak level, but also sounds just as good. It doesn’t add more distortion (unless you over-crank of course). It’s magic 🙂.

Maybe I’d better make a few clips to demonstrate the difference. Once Breakaway Web (pro) Beta is out, I will.

    Hi Luk!

Yes, Plutonium will be in Breakaway Web. It won’t be as loud as Breakaway FM can be, but it will be louder and cleaner than any of my previous processors (including Volume Logic, OctiMax).

    Here’s the breakdown:

    Breakaway FM:

    • Absolute best quality and cleanest sound when you’re pushing for loudness
    • Relatively high CPU use
    • High latency

    Breakaway Web:

    • Can sound just as great as Breakaway FM, but 2 dB quieter.
    • Very low CPU use
    • Can have low latency, for direct processed headphone monitoring
    • Even lower price than Breakaway FM

For FM stations, both of these will be available as a package, and both will have multiple-instance upgrades.

The ultimate setup for an FM radio station would be:
2-instance license of Breakaway FM (for separate processing for the air and web)
Single instance of Breakaway Web (for studio monitoring)

We will of course offer attractive upgrade deals new products become available. You will never have reason to regret the purchase of a ClaessonEdwards product!
