Hi Leif,
Just tested the latest beta of Breakaway FM. You did a great job.
I’m a webcaster and using Octiv Streamsolo. I think Breakaway is a serious candidate to
replace Streamsolo. What is exactly the difference in the upcoming version of Breakaway Web compared to Breakaway FM?
I really like Breakaway FM, so if I purchase this version, will I have all the features that are included in the Breakaway Web version as well?To reduce CPU resources I would suggest an option to disable the spectrum analyser, if you don’t need it, you should not waste resources. Is it possible to add this in the next release?
Regards,
Pavaronnie
October 20, 2008 at 3:32 am #5821LeifKeymasterHi Pavaronnie,
Thank you very much! There’s really no contest between StreamSolo and Breakaway FM. It’s been 7 years since I made StreamSolo, I’ve learned a thing or two since then, feels like a lifetime. 😉
Breakaway FM has a pre-emphasis-clipper back-end specially designed to squeeze the the highest sound quality and clarity out of FM. This clipper back-end also works great for webcasting, allowing previously unprecedented loudness and punch for web audio!
However, it also uses much more CPU power than my standard algorithm, simply due to all the extra work it must do to squeeze the maximum out of the signal.
The Web version will not have the clipper – for streaming with the maximum audio power I will recommend using Breakaway FM.
The Web version will be much lower cpu usage though.
The instrumentation is actually an oscilloscope (as opposed to a spectrum analyzer) 🙂. It uses very few resources compared to the audio processing itself, but it’s already possible to turn it off — adjust the window size so that it disappears completely, or simply close the window, and it will no longer use resources. Audio will still run in the background.

Thanx for the reply.
When will Breakaway FM be for sale? Will I get a life time upgrade to latest versions?
I read on an other board that there will be an extended version as well (included option to tweak settings). What is this version going to cost?
There is a random advertisement in the trial version. Is it possible to receive a trial key for a few weeks, so I can test Breakaway FM live on air?My webcast pc runs on Windows XP, Pentium 4, 3,2 Ghz. Can Breakaway FM run on this pc smoothly or will I experience a huge CPU load causing hickups?
Regards,
Ron

I defiantly need an upgrade from volume logic for the stream, and BA FM would be great for webcasting, but I’m just waiting for the BA Web release to do a comparison and then decide what I’ll buy. Either way, I’ve yet to find better.
November 10, 2008 at 7:35 am #5824LeifKeymasterHere’s the breakdown:
Breakaway FM:
- Absolute best quality and cleanest sound when you’re pushing for loudness
- Relatively high CPU use
- High latency
Breakaway Web:
- Can sound just as great as Breakaway FM, but 2 dB quieter.
- Very low CPU use
- Can have low latency, for direct processed headphone monitoring
- Even lower price than Breakaway FM
For FM stations, both of these will be available as a package, and both will have multiple-instance upgrades.
The ultimate setup for an FM radio station would be:
2-instance license of Breakaway FM (for separate processing for the air and web)
Single instance of Breakaway Web (for studio monitoring)We will of course offer attractive upgrade deals new products become available. You will never have reason to regret the purchase of a ClaessonEdwards product!

November 11, 2008 at 1:03 pm #5825lpy7MemberBreakaway Web sounds like it should be good. I’ll wait and see how that works. Personally, I’m more concerned about the audio being clean and consistent than being the loudest. I’ve heard many European stations (web & FM radio streams) and they have the audio cranked up to point of your ears being ready to burst. The treble is so compressed that it sounds like continuous static and the mids and bass are there somewhere when they’re not getting drowned out. A bit like the Amsterdam preset, minus the static of course 🙂
November 11, 2008 at 1:23 pm #5826LeifKeymasterI know what you mean, lpy.
I must clarify though:
When I say "Breakaway FM is louder than Breakaway Web" I don’t just mean that it’s louder.. I mean, any idiot can make it loud, just crank it up more! Normalize to 200%, it’ll be even louder 😉.
What I really mean is, Breakaway FM is louder at the same peak level, but also sounds just as good. It doesn’t add more distortion (unless you over-crank of course). It’s magic 🙂.
Maybe I’d better make a few clips to demonstrate the difference. Once Breakaway Web (pro) Beta is out, I will.

November 24, 2008 at 1:21 pm #5827AnonymousGuestHi Leif,
I don’t see or read anything about the webcaster version (DSP) of the Breakaway anymore.
Is this this in the pipeline or does the Broadcast Version now replace the web version?
Please help me out here. thanks.Patrik
SwissGroove.chNovember 24, 2008 at 1:36 pm #5828LeifKeymasterHi Patrik!
Breakaway Live will work well for webcasting the way a DSP plug-in would. It’s not a matter of me not wanting a DSP version, but I’m only one guy doing all the development, so I have to focus my efforts very intently, and there just hasn’t been time for a DSP version.
Best regards,
