    Hi Carl!

    I haven’t made a "Check for update" option yet. I might in the future, but not for the next version — there’s bigger fish to fry! 🙂

    We could always send out an e-mail to existing customers though.

    Just install on top. 🙂

    The current installer contains the same version of VAC as BBP / Live. I’m hoping to have a newer version before official release.

    Good ideas, Tim!

    1.20.21 -> 1.20.22:

    Changed the way kernel streaming devices are opened (WAVEFORMATEXTENSIBLE vs WAVEFORMATEX) in response to Maniak’s USB problem. May change it back since it wasn’t the problem.

    1.20.22 -> 1.20.23:

    Noise reduction switch added (in the right-click menu)
    FM mode indicator added (oscilloscope overlay)
    The oscilloscope text overlay code is brand new. May use it to indicate other things in future versions.
    Kernel streaming failed-to-open error message much improved.
    Output meter issue (dithering noise visible at the bottom) fixed.

    Hi Ricardo!

    BBP runs best on Intel processors. A pentium dual core is fine.

    No problem. It’s not the most user-friendly way to do things — perhaps I should include the audio format in the error message, to make it easier to spot.

    I don’t know of any good audio processing software for Linux. I believe it may not be the best choice of operating system for someone interested in audio.

    Please remember to take software availability in account when choosing what operating system to ultimately use — this factor is very much part of the deal, and a big part of the answer why Windows has maintained such huge market share while many more well designed operating systems have come and gone. Excellent software availability is also why I personally stick with it.

    Best,

    Hi AON!

    Thank you for your comments.

    I too was a satisfied Windows XP user, until I upgraded to Windows 7 just a few days ago. It doesn’t look like I’m going back.

    Unfortunately, Breakaway is only available for Windows. I am a lone programmer, and only have time to maintain one platform, so I don’t foresee there ever being a Linux version.

    Best regards,

    Maniak, could you try if 1.20.22 works better with your USB headset?

    http://bredband.leif.cx/browse/bae

    If it still doesn’t work, please check the number of channels. When you set up through the wizard, the wizard will first try to open 8 channels, then 6, then 4, and lastly 2 (stereo). In expert mode, however, you have to set the number of channels yourself.

    Thus, if you run the wizard with on-board HD audio, and then change to a stereo USB headset using the expert mode, leaving it on 8 channels (for example), it will fail to open the headset.

    Maniak, this is the extended trial mode. After the 30-day trial, it will run in this mode indefinitely, until uninstalled or registered. 🙂

    Wow, really? I wouldn’t have guessed that Breakaway Live would use enough CPU to make a difference, unless the computer was already on the edge. Breakaway Broadcast, on the other hand, is very cpu intensive.

    I’ll try to find it. What version, and at what part of the song?

    Hi Steve!

    I am very familiar with this phenomenon as something very typical of for example the 8200, but to be honest I’ve never noticed Breakaway do it. Do you have a good song example?

    My experience with the 0404 PCI is that I wasted over an hour before I realized that I had to start a new mixer project, choosing not to use any mixer features (or whatever it was), before being able to select 192000 Hz sampling rate, which was completely grayed out at the time! It’s not that bad now that I figured it out, but the drivers are still huge compared to for example Juli@.. Sure, it works, but given the choice I prefer small and efficient.

    Hi Peter!

    Scala! I haven’t heard that name since Amiga days 🙂.

    Because Scala actually relies on the sound card mixer to do its audio routing, I believe the only way to handle this is with a second sound card in the machine, connecting the output of the main card (used by scala) to the second card, used by Breakaway.

    Also, I recommend Breakaway Live, which is much lower latency than Broadcast, so it’s fast enough for video use.

    EMU 0404 PCI works, hardware performance alright, but the drivers are a pain in the neck.
