I compared a pair of Sennheiser HD800’s to my personal HD650s and was not impressed — the HD800s had something really weird going on in the midrange and sounded anything but flat, I don’t know what they were smoking when they designed them.
On the other hand, I swear by my HD650’s. They’re worth every dollar.
When I’m on the go, on the other hand, I use Etymotic ER-4P in-ear monitors. I just bought a new since I couldn’t find my old pair after my last move.. $175 at amazon. They’re so accurate, so convenient, and do one hell of a job keeping background noise out. Bass is not naturally strong, but can be with Breakaway Personal. 🙂

LeifKeymasterOh, so you had Breakaway Pipeline selected for the RDS input.. Then the error wasn’t even related to the Konnekt8. I thought you had selected it in both places 🙂.
You should be able to use Breakaway Pipeline for the RDS input, and that is the correct way to do it to use Airomate. What OS are you running? If Vista or Windows 7, there are some things you must configure — please follow the guide at http://www.claessonedwards.com/index.ph … &Itemid=75
Best,
///LeifLeifKeymasterOh nice! Hey, why don’t you run the torture test through and post some MPX so we can do a proper comparison? 🙂

LeifKeymasterHi Bamp!
Well, a list like that from me is more of a "what stations use Breakaway with reasonable settings and good source material" list.
http://www.rawfm.com.au/ generally sounds very good
http://di.fm also sound very goodNot exactly an exhaustive list though 🙂. I tend to prefer less processing over more processing.

LeifKeymasterIt’s probably my highly inefficient saving of INI files. Let me guess, the freeze happens 10 seconds after you let go of a control, and then doesn’t happen again if you don’t touch the guy? 🙂
I never saw this to be a problem in BBP though since there are relatively few parameters. In Live, on the other hand (with all the EQ parameters), it was a real issue for a couple of versions, but I believe I already addressed it for 0.90.03.

I am really interset to see how would you do that with BreakawayASIO !?
You Can NOT set one asio soundcard as BA input (in this case Axia Asio) and another asio soundcard (eg. Juli@) as BA Output.You CAN do that in BBP. But… no more LowLatency (asio).
It’s true that we cannot get very low latency between two different ASIO devices, because any time we do, we need buffering and asynchronous sample rate conversion which adds a little bit of latency. Not that much, but the algorithm latency is already right on the border of realtime dj listenability.. Even a little bit more (such as livewire’s own latency, which is much higher for windows clients than for hardware units) will push it over the edge.
Once it’s over the edge (let’s say 20+ milliseconds), it doesn’t matter anymore if it’s 50 or 500 milliseconds, it’s still too slow for the DJ to listen to. Thus, I maintain that it’s better to make the latency 500, and use those extra milliseconds to take better care of the audio than you could in a low latency environment.
BBP does have a low latency mode though, which runs the same low latency algorithm as BBP ASIO. If you’d prefer 50-100ms over 500ms, you could use that.

LeifKeymasterThe shorter the cable is, the less impedance mismatches will impact the frequency response. Thus, to keep it simple, all you really have to do is to go straight from 192k sound card to the transmitter (skip the external stereo coder, there is nothing to gain from using it), and adjust the input gain of the transmitter until you see enough modulation from what the sound card can output. Pro sound cards (such as ESI Juli@) have pretty stiff output sections and should be able to drive a 50 ohm load no problem.
///Leif
LeifKeymasterHi Mike!
Make sure not to select the sound card as the RDS Kernel Streaming input. That one should be disabled.
The sound card should be selected only in the ASIO device selection of BBP ASIO!
Hope this makes sense 🙂.
Best,
///LeifLeifKeymasterI have been able to get excellent MPX performance from certain motherboards with realtek chips. The chips themselves are good, but it depends on the motherboard design — for example, putting a too small dc blocking capacitor between the chip and the audio jack would diminish performance.
The only way to be sure is to try it on the actual motherboard you plan to use.
Best,
///LeifLeifKeymasterHi Mugambi!
I’m delighted to hear from you, and ecstatic that Breakaway has found its way into Africa as well!
1) Competitive loudness, but more natural and much cleaner sound. The reason is the algorithms under the hood — the clipper back-end is very different from traditional processors like the 8500 and Omnia 6. Of course, the only opinion that truly matters in this case is your own, but I’ve done extensive testing with both those units both before and during development, and if you have the chance to compare them to BBP, I think you’ll agree.
2) I can successfully run BBP (in Low CPU mode) on my Lenovo S10-2 Netbook (Single-core Atom N280 cpu, 1.66 GHz) with full MPX stereo out of the headphone jack! It really doesn’t take much, if your laptop supports 192 kHz output, and quite a few do nowadays thanks to HD Audio. If not, try on a desktop. You *could* get an external 192k capable sound card for your laptop, but unless you have other uses for it, it may not be worth the expense just for testing. Adam’s advice regarding Breakaway Pipeline is absolutely correct. What exactly happened the first time you tried it, when you couldn’t get it to do anything?
3) I’m currently behind the great firewall of china, so no google access — I can’t find the specs for your notebook. If you could tell me what CPU it has and what exact sound chip it uses, I can find out more.
4) At this price, the only support we can give is the forum, but there are so many skilled and helpful people here, it brings tears to my eyes! 🙂 I also of course answer questions myself.
Best regards,
///LeifLeifKeymasterHi guys!
Busy doesn’t even begin to describe it.. Plus, I now live in a much nicer town with much more fun things to do, which makes it harder to actually sit down and do real work 🙂.
Anyway I’ve just finished an upgrade key scheme which will make it possible to for example upgrade BA Live / BBP to more instances, as well as upgrade BDJ to BDJ PRO.
BDJ PRO doesn’t exist yet, but I plan for it to include 4-cores, and the 3rd and 4th cores will be able to function as microphone processors for DJ voiceover and/or karaoke mode. It will also include TCV (time-code vinyl) support!
Presets will be the same in BDJ and BDJ PRO, and I definitely want to include more presets, but I’m finding that when doing light processing (which is really all one can do for a big speaker system), there’s not that many things to change, not so many variables to play with. I myself always keep it on "reference settings" and do the rest with EQ. Does anyone have any suggestions for what to add? I can’t think of anything that’s missing 🙂.
Tngdj, thank you very much for your review! I’m glad you’re liking it 🙂.
Regarding the user interface, did you try resizing it, making it as small as it can get? How much smaller could it possibly get, it can get down to around 30 pixels tall when docked to the top or bottom. If you could do a mockup in photoshop for what you would like it to look like and include, I could always work on it.
Regarding the EQ, you’re right that a regular graphic EQ is more familiar, and Jesse is right that parametric EQ is much more powerful, and actually easier to use once you get used to it. In Breakaway DJ there’s the best of both, because by default the frequencies are set in a sensible manner, evenly spaced. Thus, you could actually treat the gain sliders as your vertical EQ sliders and ignore the frequency/width sliders.
I’m beginning to think what this thing needs the most is a manual 🙂. Am I right?

If Bob Orban makes you a money offer to work for him… will you go ? ?!!: 🙂say yes say yes say yes 🙂
Your BB program is almost finished and will live for 15 + years
Now it’s time for publicity and …money 🙂 why don’t you work with them ? it’s time to move again to another country i think..🙂
Been there, done that. Working for Orban is actually what moved me from Sweden to the US in 1999. I spent 8 years of my life in the states. No offense to either americans or employers, but hell will freeze over before i live in the states or accept employment again 😉.

LeifKeymasterThanks, Jesse!

Yorkie, even so, both my clipper and composite clipper are so unorthodox that I really doubt Bob has suddenly had the same ideas. There may of course be other ways to make a better sounding clipper.. I can’t wait to compare it to BBP on something like glockenspiel or Evanescence 🙂.

LeifKeymasterHi Sebbe!
If the installation causes a bluescreen, the most likely culprit is probably Breakaway Pipeline, as there’s really nothing else in Breakaway that even CAN cause a bluescreen.
Please look in Device Manager under sound cards, and see if Breakaway Pipeline still exists there. If it does, please delete it, and try installing again.
Best,
