I was looking at some motherboards that use the ALC889 and was curious
if it is worth a darn for BB.

    Specs look pretty good

I can go for a dedicated high end card such as a julia but was interested in hearing
your opinion on the realtek chipset.

    Thanks Scott

I have been able to get excellent MPX performance from certain motherboards with realtek chips. The chips themselves are good, but it depends on the motherboard design — for example, putting a too small dc blocking capacitor between the chip and the audio jack would diminish performance.

The only way to be sure is to try it on the actual motherboard you plan to use.

    Best,

I normally go for Gigabyte Motherboards, Their build quality
    is pretty good.

Thanks for the heads up on realtek

The best on-board MPX I have ever been able to achieve, was on a cheap ASRock board with Realtek 888.

This board was so cheaply built that it had no capacitor at all between the chip and the output jack. The result of this was that although there was also a serious DC offset, the output was completely DC STRAIGHT, and perfectly flat frequency response DC – 60k.

"Build quality" can mean a lot of different things depending on what you’re looking for 🙂.
