True, our requirements from soundcards are quite a unique useage of the 192Khz capability and a tiny portion of the market, a proportion so small that most of the soundcard manufacurers are not aware of this useage. Also the engineering required to make a soundcard with a clean output, a flat response to 80+Khz, and DC straight thru, without using filters or capacitors (which is what is creates the tilt) is very difficult and not cheap.
This is why there are very few cards out there which do not require tilt compensation at a consumer price point. Hopefully over time this will change but its unlikely for a while until the market begins to demand this in great numbers but for the majority of users, this is simply not an issue.yorkie98ParticipantI’m intriged.. whats this your creating? Is this the long awaited STL program?
yorkie98ParticipantHi, A Barix Exstreamer will play any MP3 stream if set as a stream puller. If using Edcast this will need to be either going thruough a local shoutcast server or be hosted by a shoutcast host if going thru the public internet.
In BA live, to prevent the link from clipping (which its unlikely to do), just attenuate the output by a few dB to give yourself some headroom, the Omnia will make up the difference in its AGC.
I would however suggest that you only have one of either BA Live or the Omnia carrying out the heavy processing and the other to be set to a very light protection mode. Double processing usually sounds awful as the various attack/release times react against each other.yorkie98ParticipantGuy, you’d need to be specific as to which card you are going to use but I can’t remember off hand anyone mentioning the Antex cards being used.
yorkie98ParticipantTBH.. Rackmounting is for physical robustness only and has no effect upon performance, but if you can get a system without rackmount, get that, then if you feel you MUST have it rackmounted (only any use if you have other rackmounted gear) then buy a rackmount PC case and transfer the innards into this case, don’t restrict yourself by looking for a bespoke rackmount machine as you may have to make compromises on performance/price to get it.
Finally, as mentioned above, an Audigy soundcard is not the best choice, although I have had success with audigy 4s in the past, these were before I knew better and cheapness was the key. Audigy2s should be avoided as they have a dirty output.
If you are spending money on a big rackmount machine, the final result will only be as good as the soundcard you pick. The ESI cards seem to be the favorite at the moment from the performance/price point, if you have a few more £$€ to spend, then go for the Trace Marian Alpha which is the ultimate as it requires absolutely no calibration, just plug and play.yorkie98Participant
@yorkie98:
No, Port C is AC-coupled.@Dj Buik:
After ETSI compliance test (around February I guess), can be released to relevant market.
Depending on the market interest, will go for FCC certification too.
Will ETSI compliance mean it also gets CE safety certification for Eurozone and UK use?
yorkie98ParticipantHI, in most cases the peq sliders can be left unless you have a poor frequency responce curve in your soundcard. The instructions and an absolutely brilliant tool for carrying out the tilt settings for those without sophisticated test gear is available here:
http://www.claessonedwards.com/index.ph … &Itemid=84The tilt is a very important setting to get right, and you may need to adjust the peq settings if and only if you have a very big linearity problem with your frequency curve.
As for your preset, ther is no right and wrong, its all down to taste, basically you can play with all the presets and the parameters without fear of overmodulation (once the tilt is correctly set).
All that will change is the characteristics of your sound. The settings you choose really depend upon your programming and your own judgement.
If you can tell us what kinds of music you intend to broadcast, you will get plenty of expert opinion offered, but eventually it comes down to your own taste.yorkie98ParticipantThis is sounding more and more tasty all the time, you have obviously been working very hard on this and you are making what sounds like could be a world class product.
One question, will the analog mpx input be straight DC?
Keep up the good work and looking forward to the new year more than ever 😀
yorkie98ParticipantIt seems to have all gone a bit quite regarding news on the exciter but I’m sure Sigmacom is busy working out any problems and bugs with it. Maybe it will be a very happy new year for us..
yorkie98ParticipantYou could just buy a 25 pin "D" plug from an electronics store for small change, you’ll also need a resistor, maybe get a few, a 10K, 100k, 500K and a 1Meg to suit different card input levels. An old printer lead tho should work if you can find which wires are pins 2 and 25. You will still need a resistor to tone the level down a bit but it dont have to be a precise value.
yorkie98ParticipantTry using the little audio repeater app Leif very kindly shared with us, you can route audio between VACs, pipelines and physical soundcards in whatever config you desire.
It’s Here: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=728yorkie98ParticipantLee, have you tried using the paralell port to create a square wave? you can then cal your scopes, or at least tell which one is reading correctly.
yorkie98ParticipantMaybe Leif can confirm but I think the ONLY card he states for sure has straight through DC (Zero tilt) is the Trace8 which is much more money and wasteful as it has 8 outputs.
If the Alpha has zero tilt too, at this price point (€139) I will be getting one of these straight away.December 18, 2009 at 7:05 pm in reply to: Do not underestimate the importance of tilt calibration.. #9213yorkie98Participant
Apologies to you by the way, for the royal mess we made of your extremely useful information at the top of this thread. I know this isn’t the "Nelly Furtado thread" and didn’t realize we’d go so off-course from tilt calibration… 😳
It’s OK, I joined in the discussion too…lol
