I hear what you both are saying. Administrative actions and support would justify a cost to the end user. However, I feel like this could be easily automated where you paste in your license info from the software, it’s processed and it spits out a new key. I don’t know that they need to pay a person to be doing this. Yes, development of such an automation would incur some cost. But it’s possible as I have other software that works like this. Or, do like stereo tool does and send a license key based on your paid features and that’s your permanent license key. You change computers, you look up your key and bam, done. I think it’s over-complicated as it is. I am no programmer so I don’t know what is really involved with all this I’m describing. All I know is it’s possible and probably quite feasible.
I wouldn’t have an issue paying for support, upgrades, or new versions, that’s not what this is. This is charging us to continue using the same software, just on another computer. In principle, it feels like monetizing something that doesn’t need to be. As I mentioned in the original post, if you pay for something, you should get some added value or benefit. This is not that. The benefit of continuing to use the same software. Again, the amount isn’t what’s at issue, it’s the principle of it. The FTC is cracking down on auto dealerships to help stop them from being deceptive and gaining profits and offering no added value in return. If Leif and Co need more financial support, they could consider changing into a subscription model. That may prove difficult this far in, however.
I dunno.. I hear what Alex is saying… He makes good points. Let’s make it $5 and I’ll be better with that. Is it a lot of work to copy and past a license output page into a key generator tool and copy and paste that into an email? Again, the abuse is certainly an issue that should be addressed. Someone is always gonna try to figure that out. I was surprised that after I upgraded my computer and got the new key, BaO on the old computer continued to work. But after I upgraded the NIC, it went into Trial mode within a day or two. Then I HAD to request a new key. Happily I got it all done before the fees went into place. Honestly, $15 is not a lot of money. But the principle of the matter is this kind of request shouldn’t incur a fee. I’m already paying for the new PC or new NIC and now i have to pay more to keep my software running too? Software I already paid for? That’s hard to swallow. I may have inadvertently “stolen” a breakaway license by leaving the old computer up and running a personal, private stream. It wasn’t intentionally being scandalous or whatever. But this was an example of how the licensing can be enforced better. I know that Station Playlist has an automated system on their website to get a new license key after moving the software to another computer. Once the activation issue is resolved, build an automated system and then nobody has to do it manually.
I guess since MAC addresses are easy enough to spoof, there must be other things going on. Again I literally just installed a 2.5g NIC. And changing that new NIC’s MAC didn’t work. We’re all good now. Alex H emailed the new license key to me this morning.
I upgraded my station PC with a new 2.5gb NIC and BaO went into Trial Mode. I sent the new license report to both support and broadcaster@claessonedwards.com about 24 hours ago along with several follow-up emails and have yet to hear a response back. I even tried to spoof my old MAC on the new NIC and that didn’t work. Now, for almost a full day, I’ve been getting BaO liners over my songs and such. My listeners are getting annoyed and logging off. Can someone help?
I just figured this out! I downloaded the 64-bit version of fdkaac from rarewares.org. Extracted that to an accessible folder. In the Streaming Module, I selected Custom under Encoder.
I entered the following for a 64kb/s HE-AAC stream:
(path to file)\fdkaac.exe –profile 5 –afterburner 1 –bitrate 64000 –transport-format 2 –raw –raw-channels 2 –raw-rate 44100 –raw-format S16L –ignorelength -o – –I opened another encoder and selected Custom and entered this for a 128kb/s AAC-LC stream:
(path to file)\fdkaac.exe –profile 2 –afterburner 1 –bitrate 128000 –transport-format 2 –raw –raw-channels 2 –raw-rate 44100 –raw-format S16L –ignorelength -o – –This all works perfectly and is a much more modern and much better AAC codec from the ancient Winamp (CT) AAC Encoder included in many encoder packs. You have to be sure you enter 64 or 128 in the bitrate fields and select 44100 from the sample rate dropdown in the Custom encoder config screens.
About a million years ago Jesse Graffam provided a zip file of additional encoders. I did a search here and couldn’t find it. Audio_Encoder_Codecs_Archive (or_Setup).zip. I don’t have a great way to share it. But maybe that will trigger something.
Im curious how you found this update? It’s not posted on the downloads page. Are you refreshing a page somewhere?
I would also love an adjustable target LUFS output control. If I want a 12 LUFS output level, or 16 LUFS or 10, whatever, I think we should be able to control that.
