There’s no such thing as a hardware (analog) encoder box. Ultimately it’s all software.

If your goal is quality, then pick the software that you want to use (i personally prefer Lame encoder, with my own streaming software), and then the question you have to answer is… what is the most reliable platform I can run it on. 🙂

That being said, this is probably your best bet if you’re willing to sacrifice quality for the sake of not having to do any hardware research (or software development)

If you open one up, you’ll see an Intel CPU in the middle. 😉 Oh, and you’ll need some Livewire gateways if you’re not already using that for your IP audio. (gee i wonder if it’s cheaper to do this with a few hundred $ rack mount box)

That being said… I know that Leif has of course always wanted to release his streaming software, so… we’ll have to see how that works out.

It’s still up in the usual spot. Why do you want to use a version that is this old?

    The latest versions are here:

    and 0.90.77:

Some things have been posted here before, if you don’t want to wait for people to type the same things again… try the search function. 🙂 And then maybe offer more in-depth questions if you’re still looking at this card.

being a coder myself, i understand not just how good of an idea it is to rethink things since their current architecture would have been a flub-fest to get working in 64bit, but that they are re-writing their whole drivers from scratch AND making them a unified thing,… I also see the payoff once it’s completed. They explained all of this (in that email above), and how it will facilitate very quick and very efficient updates to their drivers. 😉

I would say they delayed a long time, if anyone actually used XP 64bit, or if Vista wasn’t total crap. 😉 But with 7 yeah they still delayed a bit. They have been working on drivers for many months now tho, so it’s not like they are just sitting around and waiting to plop out a 64bit driver when they have a spare 2 days.

Hang on to your Trace Gunther. It’s not going anywhere, and will continue to be a great audio card for a long time, when many companies simply leave old products behind, Marian is updating all products with completely re-written unified drivers. I have to give them props for that. Not all companies do, case in point Apogee. I have thousands of $$ in Apogee gear, and none of it has drivers for Vista/7 at all. I’m still using XP for the ASIO in my Rosettas, but I’ll continue using the default audio drivers in my Minis on 7, for mastering latency isn’t really important. Just sayin’… and i still don’t feel "burned" by Apogee at all. It’s just the way things go sometimes.

I probably will sell my Rosettas to someone using OSX, and switch to RME, at some point.

I’ll recreate it some time this week. It was really cluttered before anyways.

I ran XP SP1 for 4.5 years straight on over 200 machines at RadioIO. The 1 machine that failed was a hard drive going out.

And we didn’t do much special to make that happen either. Just a basic tweak with xpAntiSpy to remove a few things and shut off windows networking, and of course the machines were firewalled (Foundry) from the internet…

I don’t know why people have unstable experiences with XP, cos we didn’t do anything special at all. And it ran for the extent of those machine’s stay in that NOC.

I did take a break from the forums, and many other things, until today too… for the past few weeks.

    All is very very well.

If you’re at CES this weekend, say hello to Leif if you’re lucky enough to run into him in Vegas. 😉

Back from an xmas break. Leif asked me about the forums, and what I would like to do is upgrade from phpBB to SMF, but first… I’ll re-investigate the anti-spam abilities of phpBB currently, and try to work something out there.

Here’s (with the drunk in my hand right now) to everyone here and all broadcasters abroad a profitable 2011 in more ways than petty cash. 🙂 Health… and love & joy etc.

    Cheers,

If you look at it from the perspective of the *fact* that somewhere before your AGC you will have a headroom limitation, and that you will need to not go over it, then really it doesn’t matter where your AGC is at because it’s not going to provide any additional protection against "overs" above that headroom.

What really should be done is to set a point where you will have enough headroom to not worry about it, and *calibrate* your whole system to it.

EBU’s R128, and the Loudness Unit in general, is a wonderful way to do that which is already in line with accepted practice while using LKFS (ITU-R BS.1770) for a production environment. There are already several R128-compliant meters out there (there is probably a free one by now, i haven’t been watching closely), and you can somewhat align most un-weighted RMS meters in a mixer to be pretty close to the same readings, so that 0dB RMS on the mixer is aligned with 0 LU in the rest of your calibrated system. That’ll give you 23dB of peak headroom above that point. More than enough room before your board starts to become non-linear (aka distort).

    an example of one
    http://www.nugenaudio.com/visLM_loudnes … U_RTAS.php

The awesome thing about Loudness Units is they are on average within 0.4dB (or maybe slightly less) of actual perceptive loudness to the average person. To put that into perspective, un-weighted un-gated RMS can be more than 6dB off actual perceptive loudness. 😆

You should get a prosumer soundcard, like the E-MU 0404 PCIe. Leaps and bounds above on-board sound, and it’s made to take +4dBu line levels. You’ll get better sound because of the card, and because your mixer will be operating at the levels it should be.
There is also a good reason to do so in contrast to the Breakaway DJ mixer. If you scale the stereo content, run it through a stereo processor, then mixed in mono after you lose a lot of energy generated by zeroing the CEA, which creates inconsistencies volume. This also happens when you listen to FM stereo to mono. Mixture of mono before the processor can avoid this problem and maintain consistency.
