It would not help at all — both the input and output of this card are phase linear except in the infrasonic range.

I would expect Stereo Tool’s RDS to be generated properly too. Hans does know what he is doing. From the limited information, the most likely culprit is the exciter.

Breakaway Broadcast is *much* cleaner and louder on the air than Breakaway Live with another piece of gear doing the peak control.

The pre-emphasis clippers in Breakaway Broadcast use realtime psychoacoustics to keep distortion as masked as possible at all times — the preceding multiband processor neither knows nor cares that it’s processing for FM. I have found that this is the best way to get clean, effortless yet loud audio onto the airwaves.

In this way, Breakaway Broadcast is very different from any other processor on the market (except for Omnia.9). All other processors that I know of, use a more traditional approach of designing a simpler back-end clipping first, and then adjusting the multiband section and limiters to keep distortion at a reasonable level by simply not driving the clipper that hard.

In short, putting a traditional limiter/clipper after Breakaway Live (rather than the psychoacoustic clipper in Breakaway Broadcast) will not sound very good on the air — it will either be too quiet or have too much distortion. ALL the work of making the Breakaway core’s output audio FM compliant is done by the back-end in Breakaway Broadcast, and this back-end is completely missing for Live, as it is not necessary either for live sound or streaming, and would both add delay and degrade audio quality in those applications.

Aareff, glad to see you here 🙂. I’m still ready with a soldering iron to make any modification you might suggest.

(For reference, I sent these same screenshots as soon as I made the measurements 2 years ago — in fact, I copied them from my that e-mail in my Sent Items box to post them here, 2 years later.)

    Unica,

Low latency processing doesn’t sound as good as high latency processing, because, like any job, you can do a better job if you have more time to do it.

Internet streaming usually has a latency of several seconds — what difference will 200ms or 20ms for the audio processing do?

I would recommend using Breakaway Live (in phase linear mode) and Breakaway Pipeline.

    Best regards,

Yup. I just started writing a brand new clipper from scratch. I have some ideas that will hopefully greatly help the lower midrange when the clipper is pushed too hard 🙂.

RadioSeven may still be using good ol’ OctiMax.

I DJed a lot on that station when they first started, about 10 years ago!

A large part of the characteristic sound of OctiMax / Volume Logic came from my problematic crossover design, which caused multiband mixdown cancellation, causing dynamic frequency dips between bands depending on what gains the different bands had in relation to each other. This caused attenuation particularly in the upper mid vocal range, which was impossible to tweak around. I finally solved the problem in Breakaway with a brand new crossover design 🙂.

Timmy, that depends on whether you load it into the Effect or Encoder chain.

The Effect chain goes before processing, Encoder goes after.

Uhh, Didac, you forgot to quote the part where I say (in big, bold, red letters) that this plug-in may be hazardous to audio and should not be used by anyone.

Come on man, this plug-in was made as a joke. It makes the sound WORSE, period.

in reply to: good stereo coder for breakaway live #12304

Stereo coding is easy. The hard part is the preparation that has to be done to the audio BEFORE the stereo coder, namely pre-emphasis, clipping and bandwidth-limiting.

The Left/Right audio outputs of Breakaway Broadcast are NOT the same as the Left/Right audio outputs of Breakaway Live. The former is prepared for stereo encoding for FM broadcasting, the latter is not.

Breakaway Broadcast’s system requirements are not high, especially not now, 3 years after initial release! Save yourself the trouble and get a computer that can run it — Breakaway Live is the wrong product for what you’re trying to do.

I know exactly what it was — it was the SeeDeClip declipper. It frequently *caused* distortion, especially in the L-R. The declipper I’m using now is infinitely better, and never causes this sort of issue.

Stelios, count on getting a visit! Not too awful expensive, under $400 from Amsterdam.

Hey, PM me your contact info (skype, e-mail, phone or whatever you like), it’s time we catch up!

Ray, it’s not unheard of. Check some of the curves on Greg Ogonowski’s page:

    http://www.indexcom.com/papers/loud3.html

Those are professional broadcasting products (albeit very old) and some of them look a lot like Aareff’s exciter frequency response.

This is what happens when you measure and verify only the RF and don’t pay attention to the actual audio path.
