Man, I’d love to have a Pipeline I had written myself.. But, it seems to be a non-trivial task. If Eugene (the virtual audio cable author), who has been working on VAC for probably 10 years, still can’t get it right, well.. I’m not sure I could either, at least not in reasonable time. I have made some stable workarounds, but I don’t have any experience at all writing drivers.

I’ll keep bugging him and see what happens. It’s really getting old, though — it needs to just work.

Have you turned on "noise reduction"?

If you have, but the noisegate doesn’t "catch" the noise, then try lowering his mic level until the noise gate closes (dark red meters come down).

However, if the noise is that high, that may be indicative of a bigger problem. Really, you’d need VERY loud noise for it to get that loudly into a proper, directional mic.

How far from the mic does this mic reader speak?

Radiodisco, could you explain exactly what you are trying to do, perhaps take a screen shot of every page in the SAM configuration?

I’m pretty sure it’s a configuration issue, since many people are successfully using Breakaway Live with SAM, so it’s probably not a compatibility issue.

Maybe we can help you figure out what the problem is if you can give more information.

    Best regards,

Next in the release pipeline — BBP 0.90.82, with ultra-low cpu mode for netbooks. 🙂

    Chris, you’re absolutely right!

It was a bug — in the new code for loading/saving settings, actually. A size mismatch caused the internal Trial Mode flag to be overwritten by something completely different, and that was enough for the audio engine to start playing the commercial even though the program was registered!

My apologies. These sort of things can happen so easily, and this is precisely why I always tell people to test off-air for a while before letting it out where it can do damage. Software engineering is a complicated science, and looking at the amount of bugs in windows should make it clear that throwing more manpower at the problem does not actually solve the problem. 🙂

Here’s version 0.90.82 — this bug is fixed (and hopefully no others appeared in its place):

If it passed that test, then it really should work without problems.

Could you take a look at the I/O settings and see if it’s running in "maximum quality" or "cpu optimized" mode?

I recommend trying CPU optimized — the difference is inaudible and it saves a lot of cpu power.

If that’s still not enough, next release of BBP will have a Low CPU mode which will definitely be fast enough — it runs fine even on my single-core intel atom netbook.

Holy crap, I just heard it.

Slmoo, since you don’t hear how bad that sounds, I urge you to look at the signal with Breakaway’s oscilloscope (with Breakaway) in bypass.

Notice how the oscilloscope is constant eight and density, without ever being dense at the edges? That’s bad. It means they’re pushing a look-ahead limiter WAY too hard. This causes extreme amounts of intermodulation distortion. Untrained ears may not be aware of this type of distortion, but it causes listener fatigue and tune-out just the same. People would tune out without ever knowing why.

You can also clearly see the flattened edges (on the kick drums for example) from todays music being all bent out of shape, because of their processor not being phase linear. In my opinion, a station trying to be loud while playing top40 today absolutely must have phase linear processing, or the result will be an unlistenable mess.

    Here’s a station to compare to: http://87.98.219.221:8210
This stream (BestRadio) is run by a couple of young guys in Belgium and France, and they’re using Breakaway Broadcast. The format is similar to the stream you sent (essentially north american top40).

It’s actually louder on some songs (and check out the punch of those drums!!) and the processor isn’t even breaking a sweat.

    Do I have a suggestion?

Sure. Try BBP with Plutonium and 15us pre-emph + de-emph. If that’s not loud enough, turn the bass down a bit (there’s not much bass in the stream you sent, so if you lower the heavy bass in plutonium you can get a lot of loudness for free). Then, turn speed up, maybe to 60 or 70 if you like it dense. Finally, you could turn Clip Drive up, but i would NOT go higher than +1.5! It’s not worth it. People have volume controls.

Hmm.. That’s an interesting point. Perhaps it’s me who has missed something?

What were the other software processors, and how did they interface to other software?

The problem in Breakaway is certainly I/O, not the algorithms. No promises, but if you can explain a configuration that did work in a VM, perhaps I can develop a workaround or fix.

The error message says that the sound card is busy. Are you using the sound card in another program at the same time?

    Hi Andy!

Virtual machines are great for a lot of things — except audio! I have never been able to get audio anywhere near stable in one, except if the VM is prioritized and in the foreground, with nothing else in the host machine. That, unfortunately, defeats the purpose of using a VM in the first place.

I use VMs for lots of things, but glitch-free audio isn’t one of them 🙁.

Hi Carl! Sorry, I missed your reply before.

The CPU is too slow for Breakaway Broadcast. There’s two options — either use a faster CPU (preferably a dual core intel, such as an Intel Pentium), or use Breakaway Live, which uses much less CPU.

Did Breakaway Broadcast actually pass through the installation without warning you that your CPU is too slow?

    Hi Alexey!

If you recorded it from that source, that’s web radio, not FM radio. For web radio, you can use BBP with 15us pre-emphasis for the best sound. For a dense sound like I heard in the clip, you could try just turning up Speed control on almost any preset.

Man, that sucks. What’s your configuration? Is there any way to make it work while avoiding VAC / Pipeline altogether?
