Won’t be long. I’ve made very good progress on the project, I might have a beta in the next couple of days.

LeifKeymasterHey guys, you know what —
I’m absolutely ecstatic that people are listening this carefully!
Excellent examples – Thanks lpy! I’ll take care of the problem for the next version. 😉
By the way, a couple of real song that do the same thing:
Clawfinger – "Do what I say"
Pink Floyd – "In the flesh?" (first track from The Wall)///Leif
LeifKeymasterHi Adam!
The Power control adjusts the compression ratio of both the AGC and the Multiband. Setting it low means requesting that more of the original volume differences be left intact.
Try leaving Power at 50, and turn down the Speed control to make the compressors act less quickly — that should take care of both the pumping and any volume inconsistencies.
The soft-to-loud is a different problem though. I understand exactly what you mean, and I do hear it.
The last time I adjusted the Plutonium preset was before I implemented the dual stage Input AGC, so it doesn’t yet take advantage of it.
I believe this calls for either an update to the Plutonium preset, or the addition of a Rock preset. Using carefully tuned compressor after the AGC completely fixes this problem.
I’ll take care of the problem and include it in the next version.
Right now I’m working heavily on Breakaway Live, but it shouldn’t be too many days until I can release a beta of that along with a new beta of BBP.
Thank you very much for your comments, Adam, and stay tuned! 🙂
Best regards,
///LeifLeifKeymasterIndeed.. In vista, there are two different interfaces for toolbars to implement.. One is backwards compatible (same as XP, 2000), the other is vista only. The first one does not support transparency. If you implement only the first one, it works in all operating systems, but vista then disables transparency for the whole taskbar if you use it (since it wouldn’t look very good to have a single non-transparent object on the otherwise transparent taskbar).
If Windows 7 turns out to be worth the effort, I’ll definitely implement the new interface, but with Vista being such a dog anyway, it seems like more trouble than it’s worth. As long as the audio itself works in Vista, I’m happy. 😉
///Leif
LeifKeymasterIt’s a known Breakaway toolbar issue — it doesn’t implement transparency the way it needs to for Vista to support a transparent taskbar.
I will try to implement vista transparency for the toolbar at some point. Luckily, in all the months since release, you’re the only person to mention it so far 🙂.

December 12, 2008 at 3:05 pm in reply to: I’ve been wondering about Leif’s portable gear lately… #4614LeifKeymasterGreat question 🙂.
When I need to take music on the road, I tend to pre-process MP3s through my algorithm and either write an MP3 CD (*very* oldschool – played on a discman) or load them onto a memory stick to play in my ol’ trusty Sony Ericsson W810.
I tend to favour the sony discman because of it’s incredible playing time on a single AA battery, and no trouble from flight attendants, even though it’s more than a little bulky for 2008. I listen through Etymotic Research ER-4P in-ear phones when I’m on the road, but I usually also bring my Sennheiser HD 650 reference cans with me on trips — I just never know when I’ll need them. I bought them years ago, and to me they were worth every penny.
I have actually never bothered buying an ipod or other dedicated mp3 player, specifically because of the lack of processing. What’s the point of a 20gb hard drive if I have to pre-process every file at 10x speed? It would take forever to fill it. An MP3 CD on the other hand is managable fill with my current favourite albums before a trip.
I’m not a hardware guy, so hacking it in is basically out of the question, even if it would have been nice to have. I can’t wait for the day when I can go and buy a player with breakaway built in.. Still waiting for the day 😉.

December 12, 2008 at 2:56 pm in reply to: Background Music for the Holidays-Dynamic Range Compression #4625LeifKeymasterThe Reference Heavy preset (default right out of the box) will do an excellent job. 🙂
///Leif
LeifKeymasterReference Settings for quiet environments with good speakers, and Reference Heavy for noisier environments (or lower volume listening).
It’s really that simple 🙂. They work well with any genre of music, mostly without undue sound colouring, as well as movies and videos.

LeifKeymasterHi Celar!
Excellent and valid question.
Personally, the only time I turn it off is when I feed test tones through the processing chain.
The phase scrambling does slightly alter the audio, but it’s nowhere near the degradation that happens to certain sounds in the clipper stage if phase scrambling wasn’t applied.
If you’re running *very* light processing, for a purist format, it might make sense to turn it off.. Make sure to try with Kenny G or similar (saxophone + bass) — saxophones are among the first things to be damaged in clipping if you turn it off.

December 11, 2008 at 1:34 am in reply to: How can I record Breakaway’s output without using 2 computer #4176LeifKeymasterI’m not sure about Total Recorder specifically, but you should be able to record the processed audio with just about *any* program, by recording from the sound card’s input device, and selecting "Stereo Mix" or "Wave" or "What you hear" as the recording source in the sound card mixer.

LeifKeymasterHi Maniak!
You know, the same thing happened to be now that I tried it.. The midi music blasted out at full volume, even though my Breakaway volume control was set very low.
I’m afraid I don’t have a good answer, other than that it’s a bug — in Windows.
If you look at Control Panel, Sounds and Audio Devices, Audio, you’ll see that Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth is the default midi device.
Click on About. In the About box, you’ll probably see that the digital audio output device for the software synthesizer is Breakaway Pipeline 1.So, everything is configured correctly — but the software synth plays through the wrong device.
As yet, I do not know any way around this operating system bug. The only solution I can think for now is to click on "Volume" (next to the about button), which should bring up the sound card mixer, and mute the SW Synth channel completely (and also pull the slider all the way down, just to be sure).

LeifKeymasterHi Fidoboy!
I’ll have to buy a keyboard with volume keys and test it for myself on a Vista 64 machine. Maybe something works differently there. When I developed the volume key support, I did test it in several operating systems, but I can’t remember if Vista 64 was one of them — it’s been quite a while.

///LeifDecember 10, 2008 at 1:24 am in reply to: 30Hz… Why is this freq the low end cut off point for FM? #5981LeifKeymasterInteresting!
Does anyone still use SCAs?
I believe it might be possible, at least from a technical standpoint, to generate a 67 kHz SCA in software, make it part of the regular Stereo MPX signal, and output it through a sound card 🙂.

December 9, 2008 at 1:16 pm in reply to: 30Hz… Why is this freq the low end cut off point for FM? #5977LeifKeymasterTraditional subsonic filters weren’t very sharp. Even an 18dB/octave high pass filter (with the -3dB point at 30hz) would likely only suppress 25hz 6dB below 30hz. So, the automation tone would probably still have been audible to anyone who has a subwoofer that can play that low. Not a very common situation though 🙂.
The ones in BBP are a little different. They’re extremely sharp — with the 30hz filter enabled, 25hz is at least 40dB down!
///Leif
LeifKeymasterHow thoughtful of Vista! 🙄
I wonder if there’s a way to disable that behaviour…
