Would be nice to hear with mainstream alt/rock…
Foo Fighters – The Pretender (specifically the last third)
Rise Against – Re-Education Through Labor
Paramore – Crushcrushcrush
I usually use these 3 (and a few others) to test a preset. Anything preset that can control splashy-ness is ok in my book.

AdamHMemberYou do not need BBP for a webradio setup. You also don’t technically need a soundcard for streaming purposes.
Breakaway Live is best for Internet-only stations. In fact, it’s a perfect marriage. BBP contains several pieces that you’ll never need, and the only added benefit you’ll get is a marginal difference in loudness.
Run the output of StationPlaylist into Breakaway Pipeline 1…use that Pipeline as your Breakaway input…route the output into Pipeline 2…use that Pipeline as your encoder input.
The real added benefit of running your setup like this is that you never touch the analog spectrum. Your audio is kept 100% digital through the entire chain, and in fact, is never technically converted to modulated audio until it reaches the listener.
Your onboard soundcard should be fine for production, but you really should consider doing that on a networked PC. Your automation PC is already going to be balls-to-the-wall (playout, processing, and encoding all at the same time).

AdamHMemberThe info in the PM dealt with a new preset that is being tested, but I do not have access to it. I would be curious to get Leif’s take on this, and maybe hear his thoughts on the midrange boost slider.

AdamHMemberThanks Jesse! Just responded.
AdamHMemberHaha yeah! We’re processing the mission control feeds for the International Space Station!
I wish…
AdamHMemberHey guys,
Thanks for the responses. I don’t mean to sound condescending, but this is being tested in a $20 million dollar facility. All of the equipment has been fine-tuned by Harris, so backing the mic processing down is not an option. Doing that would actually make the problem worse.
As far as settings go, power is at 35. Speed is set to 70, and the reason behind this is that the attack is not solid without it being this fast. The downside is that the release is way too fast, and Leif is aware of this issue. Because of this, he is considering separate attack and release sliders. Range is at 60, but that setting is not really relevant to this conversation if you are maintaining solid input levels to begin with.
I’m not so much interested in switching to a new preset. That doesn’t solve the underlying problem. The rock preset is extremely solid music-wise, and I would hate to abandon it when the issue is not difficult to fix (or maybe it is 😉.

AdamHMemberSorry for the delayed response…
The mics are processed with Presonus Eurekas and Symetrix gear. The jock mics are even EQ’d to accentuate midrange so the vocal audio cuts through.
Unfortunately, I am not able to get samples due to some corporate policy, but the problem can be easily reproduced. We normally use the Rock preset, but switched to Cleveland in an attempt to get more midrange. I also rolled off some of the highs, but that didn’t really solve anything.
The best way I can describe it is to say that the jock gets swallowed up by the music. The Tom Lord-Alge’s of today are smashing the shit out of every piece of audio that leaves the studio, and it turns into a wall of sound when you run it through on-air processing. Sounds awesome when the jocks aren’t talking, but when they are, the results are less-than-savory.

AdamHMemberAwesome! Thanks Leif.
BTW… I’ve sent about 5 customers your way. They are super-impressed with what you’re doing. And even better, I am in the final stages of getting 7 licenses approved for purchase by a major radio group here in the US. Kick ass!
Adam
AdamHMemberSorry about that…should have been more specific.
I am referring to the headphone processing that jocks use in a studio environment. I tried setting Extra Low Latency on a Turtle Beach soundcard, but there was too much latency. Having never fiddled with ASIO, I am guessing that is the direction we need to go. CPU requirements would be good, too.
I have an Audiophile 192 at my disposal.
Thanks!

right.. why dont we give the nice americans a real reason to get out of there and come to europe… and don’t beef up.
🙂:):)
Good luck finding a US-based radio group that will approve a purchase from overseas…much less a smaller broadcaster.
AdamHMemberFoo Fighters – Let It Die (goes from quiet acoustic to bad-ass rock)
Green Day – 21 Guns (similar to above…in addition, the hook has a beat that normally causes a processor to pump)
Also, a lot of David Lee Roth-era Van Halen sounds awesome. It’s like it was recorded and mastered last year!
Adam
AdamHMemberThanks Leif…I know they have the LA boxes on the network side, but for some reason, they don’t have them affiliate-side. And being that we’re all processing geeks, we all know that processing should be the last thing in the chain.

AdamHMember
This has been discussed at length in this thread: http://www.claessonedwards.com/forum/vi … ?f=5&t=716
It’s unlikely that any extra controls will happen.
Let me clarify by saying that I do not want control over the individual bands, just the AGC.
Maybe if you guys upload some samples of the "problems" you are describing then we could possibly try to design a "fast attack" preset that you are happy with? 🙂
Hey Lee, I know that are in possession of +, so why not try setting the Rock and Plutonium preset up so that it maintains the same attack speed when the slider is at 70, but back the release down? In fact, the attack speeds on those 2 presets should stay superfast no matter what the Speed slider is set to. Just allow the release speed to be determined by the slider. That would eliminate the need for separate controls!

AdamHMemberDoes Breakaway conform to Dialnorm standards? If so, I’ll suggest it at the TV network that I do contract work for. It’s actually a US-based national network, and they have been having huge debates among the engineers about what audio level is acceptable for network/local inserts. I am guessing that a Breakaway deployment at the affiliate level is more appropriate, since doing it at the network level would only be useful while the affiliates are in network programming.
Thoughts, Leif?

AdamHMember
…and a lot of online radio stations run on Linux (or other Unix variants) servers.
Just wanted to clarify this…they run Shoutcast on Linux servers in datacenters. The actual source stream originates from a Windows machine at the studio, most likely. The processing takes place client-side (at the radio station, in this case), not server-side.
And honestly, if you’re so bent on running Linux, route the audio out to a Windows machine where Live resides, and then route the processed audio back into your Linux box. A wise IT manager once told me "If you try to fight Windows, you’ll always lose." Windows always wins. Which explains why 90% of the programs available on the market today were first written for Windows.
