Hi not so much BBP related but you are a knowledgeable bunch.

Every 16 hours or so my stream stops playing on the PC at the TX site. I run an icecast server from the other end (sender PC) and everything is fine there. I have sent logfiles etc to Icecast and he has assured me my sources and server havent dropped. But tat the TX end every 16 hours or so winamp/mediaplayer/VLC etc all stop and wont restart.

My friend said make a playlist with the same stream and repeat and shuffle selected so if it stops it should start again. But this doesnt work. The buffer sits at zero percent.

He suggested it could be to do with soundcard inaccuracies? But thats a bit above my head.

Wouldn’t be that, since Windows is letting Winamp/etc clock the card however it wants, then Breakaway just compensates on its end.

But it certainly could be the soundcard. Don’t suppose you tried updating soundcard drivers. Also try usb/firewire (if it’s plugged into that), and chipset drivers.

Its the onboard card on the PC at the TX site, which is an Realtek ALC888s latest drivers, and the one at the other end is an Audigy SB2, with the drivers it came with but as I said the feed sources aren’t stopping so I am puzzled.

Jono, your friend sounds like a very knowledgeable guy.. 😉

This is a long term problem I have been experiencing for years also. It seems that when playing a stream in Winamp/VLC/WMP it can only play for a finite amount of time before the data runs out, the stream stops and rebuffering is needed. I have always assumed that this is due to tiny variations in clock speeds meaning that eventually the two ends drift apart in time to a point where the data runs out. This is the same for streams over the internet and also over LAN.
I have used a workaround for this which is to add the stream to a playlist 3 or 4 times and then set winamp to repeat. This way, when the stream drops, it goes to the next playlist item and plays again. This works ok most of the time but every now and then, winamp will freeze at "buffering 0%" and you need to manually press play to get it moving again. This is the biggest annoyance although selecting shuffle seems to reduce the frequency of this problem occurring, it still does happen.
I have tried increasing the buffer sizes etc in winamp but this only seems to delay the inevitable.

I would love to know if there is a solution to this one as it has plagued me for years.

    Yorkie.

    Leif’s IP STL 😛

But uh… yeah, there’s a Winamp plugin that will detect every so often if there’s any audio passing, and press play if there isn’t. I forget what it’s called, but uhm… hmm, it might even be a part of Oddsock’s "Do Something".

    I totally forget. 😆

There is also a very handy FREE silence detector program at pira.cz which can be programed to kill and re-start winamp if it stops in fact this program can stop/start just about any task can also fire backup playout and do loads of other things too. This coupled with Leif’s audiorepeater program is a godsend for an unattentded site.

Just updating yous to possible causes! Havent had it on long enough to confirm but….

On the link PC the screen saver was set to come on after 1098 minutes……1098/6- = 18.3 approx hours. Now there was no screen but it could have been the cause.

And there were in fact times when the CPU rose to 100%. Dont know if there is a memory leak or its not cur out for what it runs.

Will keep yous updated : )
