This is an old issue that happened to me, and it may help someone looking for help on the internet.

Breakaway Audio Enhancer is my main audio device, almost all the time except in recordings since I need a pure, flat sound to work with.
Then one day I won an iPhone as a gift. I never used Apple devices so I knew nothing.
Soon I figured I needed to install iTunes on my pc in order to do pretty much ANYTHING in that damn phone! And there I went, installing iBLOATunes.
When I restarted my audio was a complete crap! All the levels were way to high, clipping madly, cracking and scratching all over the place no matter what levels I lowered in the pc.
I tried using the "bypass" button on Breakaway, I tried shutting it down, and nothing.

Then I uninstalled iTunes and everything was just fine!

I also installed Breakaway trial in my girlfriend pc together with iTunes and the same bug happened.

I learned a lot that day: Apple phones are overrrated, iTunes absolutelly sucks, Apple software is fully closed and bloated and gives you no freedom of choice.
But most important lesson I learned was: Breakaway and iTunes do not mix well!

Hope I helped someone ripping their heads apart trying to figure the problem, as I read in some forums when I was looking for answers.

This bug may be of interest for developers too right? Although I don't think there is anything ClaessonEdwards can do in this matter.

In case you're wondering, I gave away the iPhone to a relative. I don't like those things, neither do I need them. I'm not a phone person. I wish I could sell it, but I don't sell gifts, its not nice!

What happens if you only install iTunes, and not Breakaway Audio Enhancer? Just wondering.

Sounds like iTunes might be fiddling with the Windows audio subsystem, even when it's not running. Lovely. Insert Louis Rossmann quip here.

I did. I uninstalled Breakaway and left only the Realtek driver. It sounded normal. The problem only happened with Breakaway installed.

Its like, imagine you record your stereo mixer with breakaway enabled. Then you listen to the already enhanced recording with breakaway enabled. Its like I had 2 breakaways enhancing the sound of the other.

Maybe iTunes has a "breakaway" of its own. Many audio drivers and players do have internal enhancements. For exmaple: In WMP you can enable SRS WOW, my DAX2 Dolby driver also has an enhancer. If you try with breakaway you can get a really dirty sound really easy.
