Of course, the fun part is testing out the presets to see which can 'handle' both a straight talk/teaching program and an AAA type of music presentation, in this case the four C's: classic hymns, country gospel (Americana), chorale and even classical. Many presets sound good to this amateur's ears – Rustonium, Reference Hot, Trinity +1 clip drive, Smooth + 0.75, Azarath. Currently testing Celeste. Of course, some are "over the top" like Empire State – though, because we are the tiniest of (LPFM) stations, I'm tempted!

You do need to use R128Gain or some tool to level your audio to -23db, as mentioned in the preset description. The unique factor is there's no real use of AGC, it's just controlled by the multiband section. It lets things live and breathe. If you have something really loud and dense and it's followed immediately by something softer, there's a bit of recovery you'll notice… But it's not at all a negative thing. Try it!
December 27, 2018 at 4:37 pm #15120beej6ParticipantThanks for the tip, Timmy! On first (early) setup, I found JG Classical to be too soft, and JG Modern to be too harsh… but now after tweaking my (non-BAO) system parts, I'm testing out JG Modern again…!
I found Celeste to be a bit harsh as well, lowering the clip drive helped a little.January 22, 2019 at 10:21 am #15121beej6ParticipantSo far I've mostly stuck with JG Modern, tweaked recently and simply by lowering clip drive by just 0.25. Thanks Jesse G!

You're welcome 🙂 <3February 17, 2019 at 2:35 pm #15123beej6ParticipantLately I've been testing out X Marks the Spot, slightly modified (a bit more clip drive).
Hi, where I find the tool for lowering the clip drive????
Thanks!!!!
Have you noticed that the text changes colour if you move any settings from the default? Certainly write down any settings yoyu are experimenting with, but, if you are not sure where you started, move the slider and you will see the text will go back to white when it hits the original setting.
April 6, 2019 at 6:44 pm #15128JesseGMemberYou can also hold your mouse over the slider/setting, and a yellow popup will tell you what the "backup setting" (original setting) is.
You can also compare two different presets, with the "Diff Preset" option in the load preset pages. This will set all of the "backup" settings in the currently loaded presets to the same settings that the preset loaded into "Recall Backup" has, and of course turn the sliders/buttons/etc text yellow if they have changed.
April 29, 2019 at 3:39 pm #15129beej6ParticipantFor any preset: If I find that a particular setting works well for music, but spoken word seems a bit harsh (a bit too much high end), what adjustments would you suggest I make to the preset?
I usually back off the Final Clip Drive, and turn down treble.May 8, 2019 at 5:06 pm #15130JesseGMember

It depends on the nature of the harshness in the speech I suppose. Especially if you're only comparing 1-2 sources of speech, and not… many, like on a for-profit station's advertising on a typical day. Backing off drive and turning down is one way. The speed of the processing can also be another way, if the harshness is more-so being caused by the processing acting too fast on the speech, which can also make speech sound less natural in a hurry (no pun intended).
Experiment with things 🙂 try a combination of things when you get the hang of how each approach moves toward your goals, and you'll know what blend of each type of change you need to get there.
For FM/AM mainly, lowering the "Brilliance" control in "Enhance" page … just lowering it a smidge… can usually get the treble to sound less stressed/pushed without sacrificing the peak loudness of the high treble.
The other thing to be careful of with speech you want to keep more natural is to not have a combination of fast multiband, with high range multiband. That can allow the multiband to increase the amount of treble a lot very quickly.
Food for thoughts 🙂
May 8, 2019 at 5:21 pm #15131beej6ParticipantThank you Jesse! I am not at a point where I am messing with the speed and ranges of multibands… yet 🙂
If there are any presets you would avoid with that fast/high range combination built in, kindly let me know.

Well it's only two knobs, if you're ever feeling a little adventurous. 🙂 The range, and how much the highest band is using, are relatively easy to see on the processing meters. Basically get a general idea for where most of the bands are sitting at, especially in the mid range. Then compare how much of a difference there can be with the highest frequency band. If there's more of a difference (between mids and highs) happening than normal, while the sensations of being harsh are happening at the same time, then it could possibly be fixed (in part?) by reducing the range. Worth trying the speed, as well as adjusting the "Brilliance" knob in "Enhance" page down to see if that helps over-all without muffling the sound "too much".It really does just take a little playing around to see how something reacts, and setting it back, trying another thing, hearing what that does, setting it back…. basically like seeing what colors you have on a pallet. Once you see what colors you have … then you can start to paint. =)
