    Hi Leif,

I am trialling the Breakaway Live processor possibly for use solely as a mic processor and so far the results are superb. I am now looking at the phase rotation options and have a few technical questions.

    1. When using the phase rotator plugin, where is it situated in the processing. I.e, is it located before the AGC so the phase rotation is performed on the raw mic input or, if not, where is it located in the chain?

    2. On each of the three main plugins (Phase Rotator, Impact/Clunk and Phase Tornado) how many poles are there on each? Also, what is the turnover frequency of the poles?

    3. On the multiband limiters (4 band on the Microphone preset) are there multiband clippers on the output of each limiter or does the output of the limiters go straight to the final clipper? Does this vary from preset to preset?

    Many thanks in advance,

    Torsten.

    Hi Torsten,

    Glad you like it! Awesome.

    1. Plug-ins get loaded before the Input AGC, so it is indeed performed on the raw mic input.

    2. Phase tornado uses a total of 48 poles, in three groups at three different frequencies from very low to pretty high. I actually tuned the coefficients by ear, so I’m not sure of the exact frequency. The others, I need to keep secret. Part of the hard earned know-how that helps me to make a living 🙂.

    3. There are no multiband clippers in any version of Breakaway, and there is no final clipper in Breakaway Live. However, the multiband limiters have impeccable peak control on their own, and only half a millisecond attack and release time. The output of the multiband limiters first go through an optional wideband compressor used in certain presets. When in use you can see it on the AGC meter, as three separate shades on the bar. It’s somewhat counter-intuitive to show it on the same meter as the AGC, but there was sensible place to put it, and in some presets this compressor IS situated after the input agc, before the multiband.

    Best regards,

    Hi Leif,

Many thanks for the detailed response! Fair point on the information restriction. I understand your reasoning. 🙂 I have a few more questions if I may.

    1. If you are not using a final clipper whatsoever, is it all done with lookahead limiting?

    2. What is the slope of the high-pass filter when cutting out say, anything below 80Hz? I have been setting it to 80Hz for mic use but am thinking that if it’s 12 or 18dB/octave, I could get away with a lot lower for a fuller sound.

    3. Does Breakaway (I am using ‘Breakaway Live’ as I am testing it with ASIO) use a dual band AGC on any of it’s presets?

Thanks again!!! I’m sorry to just burst in with a load of questions. I have looked on the forum for these specifics but can’t find them so I hope others find the answers useful too.

    Hey Torsten,

I appreciate your understanding. It’s a tough balancing act, because I love bragging about the innards of my inventions 😉.

    1. Yes! Look-ahead limiting preceded by bass clipping.

    2. In Breakaway Live, it’s 18dB per octave. In BBP, it’s a brick wall. I haven’t bothered to measure the exact number of dB’s, but if you set the high pass to 30 Hz, and sweep from 40 to 20, it will be flat down to 30, and completely gone from the oscilloscope at 25. It’s a 16384-tap FIR filter  . Why settle for sufficient when there’s overkill? 🙂

    3. No. I used Dual Band AGC in earlier algorithms (OctiMax Classic, 1999-ish), but later empirically determined that wideband with EQ on the control chain had much fewer drawbacks. For example, a coupled Dual Band AGC eats bass-heavy stuff for breakfast. This isn’t a problem with the music either Bob or Frank listens to, but I like Infected Mushroom! 🙂

    Hi Leif,

Just wanted to say thanks again for the detailed replies! I’ll carry on testing and then see if our budget will stretch to purchasing the software. What I have seen so far is impressive. I have been looking at software audio processors for a couple of years now and this is the best…by quite a long way (in my opinion, of course 🙂 ).

    Torsten.
