Will demo’s be available for this box? Any idea on pricing? Even though it may be superior to say the Omnia One FM of even the higher end boxes,i would think $ 2500-3K for starters.Hard market to tap.I think BW finally gave up.I’ve done beta for a few of these brands and looking forward to yours.Omnia recognized not every budget had funds for the omnia 5 and 6.Came out with the Omnia One at a great price point.Sold a Gazillon..They are shrew Marketers and hard to beat at their game.
August 8, 2010 at 5:48 am #11232JesseGMemberI can’t leak any information, but I can say that it’s already been in the works for YEARS now. There will be some surprises when it’s officially announced. 😉
As far as demo units, I haven’t heard about that aspect yet, but I would imagine that’s what will happen. That’s how you sell audio processors, and I’m sure Leif (and everyone else involved) intends to do so. 8)

I liked the Ariane front end on the DSPXtra. Past that, there was much I didn’t care for. I didn’t like the non-adjustable, undefeatable "return to zero" feature, and the clipping added too much grunge for me. There never were any updates for the AM version, assuming they actually sold one, so I’m not sure it was established whether an FM version could be flashed over for AM.
The DSPX didn’t seem to have enough channels to handle FM… at least considering where they put their crossover points, which you can’t adjust beyond the preset points they offer. The 4th channel limiter was way too audible, in my view.
Too bad, really. I realize processing is a voodoo art… subject to the vagarities of our individual, finely tuned ears. Personally, I thought the DSPXtra would be a better box than it wound up being… but living in the Seatlle area gives one a lot of processing philosophies to compare, and I didn’t think the BW stuff bested any other station on the dial.
I’m still blown away by what the Breakaway products to for the price. I’m under no illusions that a full-blown hardware box won’t be the cheapest thing in the world. However, if I don’t have to sell my house, my airplane and my wife to get one, I probably will.
BTW… Jesse, if you and Leif are still taking requests, please consider keeping some functionality for AM in there, would you?
Thanks!

that’s a pretty safe bet.August 8, 2010 at 12:57 pm #11235Q106MemberRodeojack, I have placed the xtra and DSP_X in a couple of markets still running them. They sound good and very competitive. One of BW’s problems was a channel of distribution which may be an issue for Breakaway here in the USA.Having a seller like BSW or Broadcasters General Store or SCMS can help move your product.Omnia and Orban do very well with the resellers.I use Breakaway on air, too.Been a fan forever.Leif and i have exchanged emails for a long time. These guys know their processing and have an amazing product.Looking forward to the new box,it will be a killer.(8600 & O11 watch out)
August 9, 2010 at 6:48 am #11236RodeoJackMemberyah… like I said, it’s frequently a matter of personal taste and one’s "ears". I’ve worked with a lot of FM processors, though admittedly not at the level that someone like Jesse has. Long term, I don’t find the BW boxes easy to listen to, compared to others I have to work with. However, they’re probably fine in other markets. So far as I know, no station in this market uses one… certainly none of the major economic competitors.
To each his own, and I mean no offense to you.
BTW… I purchased my BW equipment through Progressive Concepts, and had no difficulty receiving any of it. Eric has been as easy to deal with as Broadcast Supply, where I get much of my equipment (they’re only about 25 miles from my place). I once had to send a processor back to BW, and the turnaround was fast. While I may not care that much for their processors, I am a huge fan of their transmitters.

It was always a work in progress on the BW processors. If you ran them hard the clippers got too happy. One thing that irked me was if you had the processor at the xmtr and had a power blurp ,the processor would power up but not the processing mode,U had to go to the site and do a complete reboot. As you know the UK loves 240ac over there .The boxes lacked the clarity that the Omnia boxes have.I owned the 6exi and the orban 8500 and did beta on the omnia 3.Overall i would give the BW boxes a C grade. But they were great at BW on service .I remember the first dsp-x.I could not believe how horrible the presets were.I agree that their xmtrs and exciters are excellent. That little one watt is a beast.ps FWIW,the newer box like the mini FM and AM SE were very nice.I believe that was when goran tomas was on board.he’s pretty sharp.

September 21, 2010 at 2:22 am #11241Peter TateParticipantHehe we love 240 VAC here too in Australia. Also the money saved on not needing as thick a copper wires!
What bearing does that have on the audio processing done by the box itself?
September 23, 2010 at 7:53 am #11242JesseGMemberIt ideally should have none at all. The computer’s power supply is for DC current. 😉 So ideally it’s filtering out ALL non-dc signals. The mainboard has some of its own conditioning, and soundcards sometimes do too, especially anything external.
The Apogees I run are completely power & electrically isolated from the computer even via USB, and the power supply for the card itself switches 150,000 times a second, so even with a spark gap on the same ac line, my audio can be uneffected. Not the usual setup though.
😉
