I finally got the minor modification from the FCC and now am preparing to go live. I have one question I want to ask about BBP My energy-Onix exciter does not have a stereo generator. I found this page here on the site.
http://www.claessonedwards.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=62&Itemid=79
Which has this FAQ,,
Does BBP have a built in stereo encoder?
Yes, absolutely! BBP is a real FM processor, and can generate a tightly controlled overshoot-free composite signal through any 192 kHz capable sound card.
Here is my setup to start.
A. Energy-Onix Exciter w/o stereo, into my Henry 250 watt Transmitter.
B. Computer with Zara Automation, into a Beringer 1202, which plugs into the exciter.
1.So with BBP, I would have stereo out of the sound card, but wont be transmitting actual stereo until my exciter has a stereo generator, correct?
2. Is there a software based stereo generator that I can utilize? I highly doubt this since, I would still be feeding it into the mono exciter, correct?
3. Will any of the the software here "enhance" a mono signal?
Thanks in advance,

Ok for a start, you will not need the Behringer 1202 at all. Here is how you should configure your setup..To begin with your computer upon which you have Breakaway installed, MUST be capable of 192Khz operation. The very best soundcard to use is a Marian Trace Alpha. If you can’t source one of these then I recommend an ESI Juli@ which are easy to source. For ease, I shall refer to the Juli@ card but if you get a Trace alpha then replace each reference as appropriate.
If your playout is on the same PC as you are running breakaway, you will need to set the Zara output to "Breakaway Pipeline 1".
If your playout is on a different computer and/or you have a mixer in your setup, the audio from this must be connected to the input of the Juli@ card.
This is where the magic begins.. The computer with breakaway running, not only processes your sound above and beyond industry standards, but it also acts as your stereo coder (and optionally RBDS/RDS coder if you plugin the Airomate software for €25).
You then connect the output of just one channel of the Juli@ card into your exciter (remember this is now a multiplexed signal). You will now be transmitting in stereo with fully processed audio. You should think of the computer running Breakaway with the Juli@ (or Trace Alpha) card fitted as the equivalent of an Orban Optimod 8500 (only better). You connect L/R stereo audio into it and you get fully processed and multiplexed (transmitter ready) audio out. It almost sounds too good to be true I know but this is how advanced Breakaway is as a product.
It’s best to have the breakaway PC doing this job standalone but it should be ok to run a basic automation system such as Zara on the same machine if you wish or if you need to.To answer your question "Is there a software based stereo generator that I can utilize?" the answer is YES, Breakaway has this built in. There are a handful of other programs which can do this also but Breakaway stands head and shoulders above all of them as the only professional quality processor AND stereo coder out there.
The most important thing to understand is that you must have a 192Khz output soundcard (most standard PC soundcards are 48Khz). Without this, none of this is possible.I hope this helps.

Thanks for the great response, that has answered my questions . Now I will focus on getting, the Juli@ soundcard TO START, since I can use it down the rd with my automation computer, which will input into computer #2, which will utilize BBP. I will need to make/buy a jumper that is a 1/8 stereo jack to BNC, which is the MPX input on my Energy-Onix.
EDIT: After talk with my consultant, he has instructed me to ask the following question.
Does BBP generate a stereo sub-carrier and if so how does it take the place of a stereo generator?
Are you in the states?
GuyMarch 1, 2010 at 5:24 am #10015JesseGMemberBreakaway outputs a completely compliant composite FM signal, aka MPX. It also has inputs for an external RTS (software or "hardware" can be used). It has settings for both 50uS and 75uS pre-emphasis.
It completely takes the place of the stereo generator because IT IS a stereo generator. A totally compliant one with almost perfect filters too. Someone would have a VERY hard time creating one as high quality in analog form. 😉
The only thing you would ever need to do after a stereo generator is SCA injection, but that’s still done analog many times, and there’s lots of FM stations that don’t have any SCA side-band.
March 1, 2010 at 12:42 pm #10016timmywaParticipantGuy, I am looking to relocate to WA (my home state) from UT (pleh) hopefully this summer. Can you give up some info on the location of your new LPFM? I will most likely reside in the Olympia/Tacoma area, depending on what jobs are out there. Also what will your station’s format be?
Thanks!
March 1, 2010 at 9:31 pm #10017AnonymousGuestTim,
KAPY is in Port Angeles. I am going to start with a Traditional Country format. What are you going for work out there?

March 1, 2010 at 10:37 pm #10018RodeoJackMemberCongratulations on your CP for KAPY… and also for bringing a classic call sign back to Port Angeles.
I was able to tour the original KAPY, back when Charles Herring owned it. It was a very nice facility, located next to the golf course… a log building, if I recall right.
Hope to hear your new signal soon!
March 1, 2010 at 10:45 pm #10019AnonymousGuestHow cool! We got the call letters because I had talked to Charles daughter, she told me all about " KAPY Country" and " Have a KAPY Day". I wish I could of met him,,,,,,,,,,,, Are you in PA?

March 2, 2010 at 8:05 pm #10020RodeoJackMemberNo, I’m near the Bremerton (WA) National Airport. I never actually worked for KAPY, though they were going strong when I got my first radio job at KONP. I was in high school back then (early ’70s), and a couple of the employees are still there.
Charles has since passed away. He was a well known and respected news person, having spent a number of years in Seattle TV before buying KAPY.

Guy
Hi Guy, yes, Breakaway (Broadcast) does generate a stereo subcarrier and it does totally take the place of a traditional hardware generator. It takes the place of a hardware stereo generator by fulfilling exactly the same function, in the same way that an automation playout PC replaces a hardware CD player, or a PC can be used instead of a pocket calculator, a typewriter or a DVD player etc… etc..
I am not in the US, I am in the UK.

Guy
Guy, ATM, I’m looking for mostly anything. I’m in the IT field and that would be the first choice. I love radio and would snap voraciously at the chance to get back in the game..
Good luck with KAPY! When do you foresee launch?
March 3, 2010 at 3:18 am #10023AnonymousGuestTesting (on air) as I am typing this! Audio is somewhat lackluster, but it is what it is for now. As soon as I am licensed (CP now) WE need to make one last strategic move, which will put us up on a nice transmitter site 700ft above the city This should put a listenable signal into Sequim. I am getting excited about this. It was so cool driving around and listening to my automation goes thru its playlist and I was actually hearing it thru my car stereo not my computer speakers! I will have a better answer on the last move at the end of the week. We should talk some time,
Guy

March 3, 2010 at 3:20 am #10024AnonymousGuestI know Charlie’s story, he was a great news person for sure. You still in touch with the guys at KONP?
No, I’m near the Bremerton (WA) National Airport. March 3, 2010 at 5:59 am #10025RodeoJackMemberNot really. Used to see Scooter Chapman from time to time, but it’s been awhile. Now busy with some radio projects in Shelton. Keep in touch though, if there’s anything I can help you with… even brainstorming.
