Greetings,
I have a laptop running BBP ASIO and i’m facing a challenge. Perhaps BBP Live will do this, I have not tried the demo.
I’d like to sidechain compress a mic input and mix into the broadcast signal. Does anyone have ideas if this is possible? I’d basically like to duck the audio channel based on mic input. I would prefer this was done completely software to avoid extra hardware expenses.
Have been searching high and low for standalone sidechain compressors that I could use in complement to BBP, however I have not found anything.
Anyone have some wisdom for me?
Thanks,

But things just have a habit of sounding the most natural on an Aphex 622. So that’s my fav. Leif was pretty impressed with the overall sound on it on the calibrated $50,000+ rig we demoed for him just last weekend.
You can do it in software, but you’re going to introduce an audible delay before the audio processing, at least in your monitoring. 🙁
September 21, 2010 at 2:08 pm #11472AnonymousGuestOoooh… sexy. Yes, I believe Drawmer is very good. However I’m opting for software because my application doesnt require quality and delay is not an issue.
I’m actually doing a show concept which has a video element which introduces roughly 2048ms of delay which means I have all the time in the world. I synced the sound through trial and error to the delay I get from cameras rigged through GrandVJ which is a leading VJ software. So as the sound and video comes out the other end with 2048ms latency, it actually syncs fairly accuratley.
My need for sidechain is a new show concept we are working on called "Table Sessions". A DJ/VJ pair does their thing as normal however we are adding a new element where a bunch of DJs sit around getting pissed and providing commentary on the music, mixing and other numbness.
I want to duck that table mic overtop the normal DJ/VJ and I’m using a neuman studio mic which is nice and expansive for open air environments.
I’m going to try the BB Live thru BBP ASIO combo tonight and see if that helps. Its not achieveing ducking at all, but according to the copy on the site, it should at least mix and cover peaks fairly nicely.
Barring that, I can always use Ableton Live because I know I can chain compressors that way in a live environment. I just feel its extra CPU cycles I dont want to achieve that since Im running 4 machines in my setup and dont need an extra computer for my wife to yell at me for ;-D
September 22, 2010 at 2:54 am #11473AnonymousGuestOk, all done. To close this post I managed to achieve what I wanted which has worked out astonishingly well with my super awesome RME Multiface II (which I nearly blew up finding out that you CANNOT loopback digitally with a cable)
Using Orion Platinum which is a software which is pretty much half between Ableton Live and Reason, I did the following:
1) Input from mixer IN 1&2 to Orion, labelled as "Mixer"
2) Pre-amped mic into IN 3&4 to Orion, labelled as "Mic"
3) Sidechain compression on Mixer channel chained to Mic, hard knee, fastest attack, medium release at quarter second
4) A Waves C1 Gate on Mic channel which is configured with a medium floorm configured just above the amount of noise coming in the mic
5) The output of this software is going OUT 1&2 which I mapped to phyiscal out 7&8, use a cable to loopback into IN 5&6
6) BBP ASIO is now set to IN 5&6, and OUT 5&6 (with side mapping to other outs for several pieces of gear I record from)The result was quite impressive for only a few hours of work. My mic is now off of my mixer so people dont have to hear me talk while Im playing music. But having sat around with trying to talk to myself with headphones on, montioring BBP ASIO and sounding like a complete jackass, I now have quite nice auto-ducking when someone uses the mic. Now just need to limit it, but the result is great because BBP will now smooth out the peaks on it;s own over the audio. Nice thing with Orion is now I have a second interface which I can tweak the EQ on the audio ever so slightly.
Not sure if that helps anyone, but it was great for me. Now add +1 on BBP VST because that would mean I can do everything I need from Orion Platinum 🙂
Will ask Santa for a Drawmer in few months though
