Mr. Graffam you ROCK. (But you probably already know that) The New York preset is the only one I found with the ability to enforce a consistent sound no matter what. In testing, I played an oldie from the 50’s, followed immediately by a dance track from last year. The CHR preset wasn’t keeping the same spectral balance between those two songs, but then I tried “New York”, and wow. These two songs, recorded decades apart, sounded like they were mastered by the same guy.

Let me tell you, that preset is rock steady. Its subtitle should be: "Them dynamics ain’t goin’ anywhere!" I don’t know if you had to spend weeks working on the New York preset, or if you’re able to just bang these things out in an afternoon… but whatever the effort, it definitely paid off.

My favorite recipe: New York, Final Drive -1.0, Power 35, Bass Shape -30.

I like the New York preset, too!

Here’s what I have it set at:

    Final Drive: -3.0 dB
    Range: 75
    Power: 25
    Speed: 55
    Bass Boost: +5
    Bass Shape: 0

With those settings above, I get a clean, loud, steady sound with no pumping effects at all!

It actually sounds better than ALL of the local FM stations here.

Thanks Leif for this great processor!

    Gotta agree.

    I’m rollin’ with these settings:

    Range: 90
    Power: 22
    Speed: 62
    Bass Boost: -10
    Bass Shape: Normal

Consistent, clear, and LOUD! Perfect for modern rock/alternative stations.

Is the New York preset only available in BB and not the Live version? I just started using BA Live, and don’t see it.

If not available, is there an existing preset in BA Live which could be tweaked to approximate it?

Leif removed it from BA Live because of some pretty good research by some individuals on this board (myself included). But before I make myself look like a genius, it was really just by accident that we discovered it…

The backend on Live does not have the ability to handle the intense power created by the New York preset, so it ended up creating a very muddy sound with plenty of reasons for listeners to tune out. We figured out that BBP is the only processor with the ability to control the final stage of the monster created in the multiband stages, so it was taken out of Live.

The thing you must remember when comparing both versions (and this is the thing I had the hardest time with) is that Live is NOT designed to be the loudest processor on the block, but BBP is. So if being the absolute loudest station on the ghetto blaster is your forte, than you should use BBP. But if you’re looking for the cleanest, most controlled sound on the web (or HD2, or DAB, or whatever), Live is just for you. It won’t be the loudest, but then again, you’re not trying to blow everyone in your market out, so who cares?

I’ve been using Live for almost 3 months with some settings that Leif and I came up with for alternative rock, and the sound is phenomenal!

Loud is not my thing; Clean & Good are. I didn’t know what "New York" sounded like, and folks here were raving about it so I thought I’d ask. I ran BA Live through my SAM system just to test it, and believe me, it can provide more than enough Loud, Clean, and Good for me. That’s why I bought it. 8)

BA Live’s (and SAM’s) new "home" should arrive in a few days, along with an E-MU 0404 card. Once I have everything in place, I’ll be haunting these forums and picking brains. I’ve read just about every post here, and this place is full of people I can learn a lot from.

    Thanks for your reply.

And I asked Leif to have the preset removed from Live. I agree with AdamH. New York was the one preset that I actually made specifically FOR the FM/AM backend of BBP. All of my other presets were made for DAB and then ported to FM. In all of those cases it worked fine, but when I made New York I wanted to squeeze every last ounce out of the FM/AM backend.

I actually did make a version of New York now, for DAB, that seems to work OK. So it might make it’s way back to Breakaway Live. We’ll see, no promises yet. 8)
