    Hey all,

I run a low-power FM station off my Win7 computer, using an external sound card and transmitting through a basic FM transmitter. I’ve optimized sound quality on the sound card, and settings for FM transmission. The sound is clear, but the volume is obviously lower than commercial FM stations.

I believe what I’m looking for is sound compression, in order to boost the output volume without bleeding over into distortion levels.

Am I on the right track, or do I need to be considering a hardware solution?

Suggested h/w options (from the FM transmitter company):

    cheers,

To be clear, you may be asking for two different things:

    – How loud (maximum) is your feed supposed to be into your transmitter without clipping.
    – A more "stable" sound across different songs/song types.

For the first, you’ll have to do some experimentation with your equipment to determine that.

For the second, yes, Breakaway does what many hardware compressors can do, and more.
