    Hi Leif,

Any news on the modified rock preset…super fast attacks and moderate releases 😀 ? And maybe even throttling back on the brightness? I’ve found that a relatively flatter sound (and maybe a touch of midrange) does wonders for TLH and reduced listener fatigue.

If you have something in the works, I’d love to test it for you!

    Thanks,
    Adam

I guess it’s not going well? LOL

    Hi Adam!

Super fast attacks? That wouldn’t work very well on classic rock would it?

Less brightness is certainly a possibility, though. I’m in the US at the moment, I’ll make sure to record some MPX in different places so I have a good reference. 🙂

    Hi Leif,

I would say that classic rock sounds better in CGsmooth. It retains the original EQ of the recording (which prevents it from sounding fake) and handles the dynamics of the older recordings much more gracefully than the Rock preset.

Since the Rock preset is an offshoot of Plutonium, it was obviously written to deal with the fat, pegged wave forms that come out of the studio nowadays. And it does great with that. I have just noticed splashy-ness with some specific songs where there are China cymbals (a lot of modern rock songs use these), and I am certain that a faster attack would be the cure.

I recently had a sit-down with our head engineer who configures all the processors within our company in the southeast (close to 60 stations), and his biggest recommendation to me for processing rock is fast attack, moderate release, and minimal brightness. And more cowbell.

I am going to try to get an MPX recording of some processing and send it to you.

Alright. I’ll check out the MPX and see what I can do. I’ll also try the faster attack — maybe it’s a good idea 😉.

Hey, it looks like I’m really going to need that MPX. I find myself tweaking just for the sake of tweaking (to make it different), but not doing a good job, because Plutonium already sounds excellent to me on rock music.

So, let’s hear that MPX, let me know what kind of sound you’re looking for.

    Hey Leif,

I just talked to our engineer this morning (same one referenced above), and he is going to take me out to the Tx site next week so I can record directly out of the back of the unit. He did warn me that it may sound different than what I’m used to hearing on-air, but it should still convey a similar feeling.

So, let’s put this on hold until I have something tangible to give you (rather than speculation!).

BTW, what settings are you using in Plutonium? My settings may be the ones to blame.

    Hi Adam!

If it sounds different than what you’re used to hearing on the air, that means:

    a) your radio sucks 🙂
    or
    b) the transmitter sucks
    or
    c) your engineer listens to composite without stereo decoding or pre-emphasis

Because, MPX out of the processor sounds *exactly* like what you could expect to hear from a good radio tuned into a station, only with less background noise.

My apologies — this is a big pet peeve of mine. That whole spiel that certain processor manufacturers do, "you have to hook it up to YOUR transmitter and YOUR studio to know if the algorithms inside are any good, to see if they’re compatible to make beautiful music together". I call bullcrap. The processor determines the sound of the station, period. If the transmitter alters it in any way, it’s broken. (any modification ruins the peak control, and thus robs you of loudness. any extra peak control after other modifications, makes it an audio processor, not a transmitter).

That being said, I’m looking forward to that MPX! Thank you.

I’m going to post modification instructions for the Tivoli Model One shortly — that way, those who are so inclined can DIY and easily get composite off air.

I tend to run Plutonium without modifications (that is, all controls in the middle). I may boost bass a little bit, but it’s important to keep the balance — if you want more bass, you have to sacrifice some loudness, or you also get more distortion which you didn’t ask for.
