If BAE Recorder ever comes alive (which many of us hope so), I’m wondering how do you guys prepare your tracks for on the go?

I’m thinking of MP3Gaining all my tracks to 90 db (using "track gain" instead of "album gain", as I like to listen to music to the same level regardless of it genre), this is supposed to be a non destructive process for the mp3 (no re-encoding). This does not provide the improved sound BAE gives, but at least it helps to level the volume between tracks. I made some testing and the results are good, but some quiet tracks tend to get quieter after this gain (if there is a part with a loud sound in the middle, like classical), so you still have to raise and lower the volume when necessary. An example is when you put together soft music (new age, etc.) with something heavier like rock. I know this is not what most would normally do, but this is for testing, and BAE has no problem at all to keep a steady volume, with this kind of test.

As mentioned in another thread, re-encoding your tracks with win amp’s disk-writer + other normalizing plug ins, would be another option, but it takes longer.

I just would like to know what has worked for you best, so all suggestions are welcome. thanks!

There is a feature in MP3GAIN called Maximize or something that does more "gain riding". Purists would never use it as it changes the song. But it’s a little more aggressive.

For MP3s from modern pop/rock recordings or 21st Century remasters of older stuff – I listen to them as they are. For classical, for transfers from old vinyl or old CDs or for any low quality recordings – I try to enhance them before transferring to my MP3 player.

Many times I have used Winamp with Volume Logic and Output Stacker to process files. On my PC this is the only way I can be sure of getting results with no occasional pops, clicks, stuttering etc.

But BAE sounds so much better than Volume Logic. I keep trying to record output from BAE and sometimes I get a clean recording but most times there are one or two pops / clicks. I am finding v1.30.02 a bit more successful.

I would love to be able to process files using BAE as cleanly and reliably as I can with Winamp and Volume Logic.

I am hoping BAE Recorder will do this for me.

@timmywa, I never used the "gain raiding" option, I’m using v1.2.5 (v1.3.4 is beta), the is one option "constant gain", which I think is the same you mentined. I’ll give it a try.

@Nick, yep sometimes I use WA+VL to process my tracks, it gives you good results, but I agree, not up to the BAE standard. BTW, since you have to record your vinyls in realtime, you could record BAE’s output, with Absolute Sound Recorder or similar. I think there is a tutorial somewhere in the forum.

    thanks both.

If you go to Options, then Advanced… You’ll see this screen… Then that note will pop up telling you about how bad it is it use it… but I would guess in an ipod it wouldn’t be such a big deal. (this is ver 1.2.5)

    Good luck.

I don’t use MP3 Gain, because ReplayGain is built into my player.
