Can someone explain in layman terms what a composite clipper is. I was listen to a station at home that is very loud, I know they don’t use BBP and I asked about what they do use and all the info I got was "they use two composite clippers". I google a bit but it didnt explain it very well. They do sound very compressed but I was just curious how they get so loud staying within the legal limits.

Basically it’s clipping the signal after it’s encoded into stereo. Composite = the MPX signal.

Breakaway already gets pretty close to as loud as you can ever go with MPX clipping anyways, but cleanly. I would bet that station doesn’t sound very clean, assuming that daisy-chained MPX clipping gave them any additional loudness.
