Hi! I’m a possible new user that’s trying out BreakawayOne and hoping to find the right setup for me to move forward that it. Hoping that the forum here can offer some suggestions?

I’m setting up a HD (online) broadcaster. The music played will vary but a lot of it is alternative or rock, with some pop mixed in, some new and some older, back to the 1980s. As such, there’s a variety of sounds and dynamic ranges in the source material.

I’m looking to get a sound that’s pleasing for the listener, and totally transparent when songs get louder/quieter, that brings all of these sounds and genres together. Achieving a LUFS between -12 and -14 is preferable as Spotify uses -14 nowadays.

The HD stream of Swedish national station P3 has a pleasing, really well pleased sound that works on pop but also alternative bands, I’d like to recreate this sort of result (you can listen anywhere): https://sverigesradio.se/sida/kanal.aspx?programid=3634

Another station that has a sound similar to what I’m going for is BBC Radio 6 Music in the UK. They play everything from indie music to jazz to modern pop and it all works. Obviously, they use an Optimod, but on the online streams it’s not set up aggressively.

So far I’ve tried every preset and done some rigorous tests (recording each preset versus a recording of some of the radios above on the same song, even!) and nothing is quite right yet. The closest is actually the base Reference Settings, in terms of examining the waveform on a song. But that preset is quite quiet and I’m not sure if only increasing the Final Limiter Drive on that is the right way to make it louder, I tried +2.5db and it still didn’t feel quite right.

So, I’m hoping the really experienced heads here can:

    • Suggest the preset you’d use to get the sound of P3 in the link above, or 6 Music? Even if it’s a totally different one, or involves tweaking the base settings of a preset?

    • Any other advice to achieve the sound I’m going for?

I’ve read what feels like every archive forum thread already but nobody ever really talks about these stations nor trying to create the sound of a station that covers many styles and eras, so many preset chats are about dance music! So hopefully this will be useful to others as well as to me.

Thank you for your time 🙂

Nobody? Not sure if anyone offers preset advice and input here still, I know the days of Leif replying to everyone are understandably long gone (still some useful input from 2009 and so on available on Google though!) but hoping some of the other setting/preset experts might have some advice? 🙂

Interesting you mention you like Reference. I did a small tweak to it and I literally just posted about it on a new post haha. Here’s the link, let me know if you like it. Its not loud, but I find its great for many forms of audio. All Around Good Preset

I quite enjoy Rustonium. I tweak most of the settings to mellow/balance it out. But as a starting point for me, it’s been great. My station plays new country and back to the 90’s. It’s aggressive, but the amazing-ness of BreakawayOne makes it sound so great! You can listen to my station at https://bit.ly/listen2us. I’ve used several presets over the years, including reference, the Leif one (i can’t recall the name) and Jesse’s Modern one. But I always came back to Rustonium. My main adjustment is to pull down the Final Drive to -2.5, which way calmed the preset down. I believe it was intended for FM, not streaming, per se.

Hello! You might find the OUTMIX entries near the bottom of the AMX preset files (open in a text editor) handy for adjusting loudness or final coloring. My use is to turn it down to about half values so I can get more headroom in the final limiter (more than the regular -6db).

To access the AMX files for the built-in presets, save the preset to your hard drive first.
