I am in the process of replacing one BA1 PC with another. I have copied the zipped configuration files across to the new system. With respect to BA1 I am confident that both systems are identical, however, they are using two different external sound modules. The original is using a MOTU Ultralite Mk3 sound module and the new one a Behringer U-Phoria UMC202HD. Unfortunately the output volume on the new one is considerably lower than the existing one. Each sound card appears to be set for 100% maximum audio output. Is there an overall output gain control on the BA1 application that could boost the output level without causing degradation to the audio quality?
Any advice would be gratefully received.November 29, 2024 at 3:09 pm #17548MilkyKeymasterUnusual that two sound devices should be so different. They are usually set to a defacto output which is similar from device to device.
I know that you can provide input gain (HD core > Misc > I/O > Main Input > Input Gain). Does this help?

November 30, 2024 at 1:31 am #17550polopuddingParticipantHi Milky. I am a bit reluctant to do anything on the input side as I don’t want to overdrive it and cause clipping. I’m considering “daisy chaining” the output through an other amp to give it a bit of a boost prior to sending off to the transmitter.
November 30, 2024 at 2:15 am #17551polopuddingParticipantHi MrKlorox I increased the Final Limiter Drive from -3 to 0db which has increased the output a little, thanks. I’ll monitor it for the next few days to see if there is any negative impact on me having done this.
Regarding your second suggestion, “Outmix lines in the preset files” which ones are you referring to? I have navigated to \Users\[USER]\AppData\Local\BreakawayOne but the config files and AMX files within this directory and sub directories look far to complex for me to start experimenting with.
Any suggestions of what specific files and what data entries I should adjust would be helpful. Thanks for your advice.November 30, 2024 at 2:08 pm #17556MrKloroxParticipantHi. So save a preset to make a copy of it and open it with a text editor.
You’ll want to find the final_lim_drive line and try increasing it. Save then load the modified preset and see if it’s any better. I don’t know if it maxes out as 100 (percent?) or goes higher if told to.
final_lim_drive=50
Then there are the outmix[#] lines that when raised also make the final signal louder, in case the final limiter drive value won’t do it alone.
outmix[0]=50 outmix[1]=50 outmix[2]=50 outmix[3]=50 outmix[4]=50
I hope this helps. I don’t know if this is the correct method to achieve what you want, but the clipper/limiter is very clean and shouldn’t distort your final signal.

If this is an option, it may be the correct solution.

December 1, 2024 at 12:46 pm #17562MilkyKeymasterObviously, using another device to give you some more control over the levels (a bit like using a mixer channel or Distribution Amplifier). Many radio stations have a DA rack in the control room to tweak all of the sources to a similar level. However, it intoduces yet another source of noise, distortion and breakdown failure risk.
December 15, 2024 at 12:45 pm #17577pos1ParticipantThe UMC202HD is known for having “anemia” on the main L/R output compared to other cards. Although it’s not the best solution, you can use the headphone output instead of the main output. I would also point out that the 202HD can be used for HD core, while I would not recommend it for MPX/FM.
December 16, 2024 at 12:12 am #17580polopuddingParticipantThanks for your reply POS1. What would you recommend for the MPX/FM that is not going to be in a similar price range to the Behringer UMC202HD?
Regards
Eamonn
December 16, 2024 at 12:36 am #17581pos1Participantin that price range, I recommend presonus studio 24c. It’s a nice and clean device. Requires very little square tilt adjustment, and PEQ correction for band 40-60KHz (it has cca 1.5dB rolloff)
