Hello all..
I recently purchased Breakaway Live for processing audio from a USB microphone exciting an Amateur Radio transceiver as described on my website at http://www.k4qky.com/the-station/audio-processing.html
Hopefully someone with experience using Breakaway live as a live radio broadcast processor will review the contents of the above web page. Not having any documentation for properly setting up Breakaway Live for live radio processing, I’ve resorted to a trial and error approach.
What I’m seeking with this posting is a critique of my setup. I’d especially welcome any thoughts and recommendations on how I might make improvements.
Best regards to all,
Don

With "New York", you get a very nice DX-Signal – strong and loud. "News/Talk" also works very well. But – to be honest – the internal wideband-compressor of the Yaesu works nearly as well for this job as BBP, and you don’t need to run a computer everytime you want to be QRV.
Just IMHO 😀

I elected to go this route simply because my transceiver has a usb virtual com port driver facilitating passage of tx, rx audio and rig control. Really performs well together with a USB mic with minimal drain on the cpu. I am especially pleased to do this with nearly zero latency without the need for ASIO4all.
Not being a DXer or contester, my objective with Breakaway Live tends to favor achieving voice fidelity/clarity rather than enhanced talk power per se. I’ve tried several of the presets. Thus far, I prefer microphone 2, Oldies and Zenith although I’d prefer more high end emphasis. Many of the other presets seem to pick up too much background noise from the radio shack including blower noise from the linear power output amp. Perhaps I should add some sort of noise gate plug although I fear it might deteriorate latency. I have the same concerns about adding a EQ plugin to brighten the high end.
I’ve also read forum posts that indicate that Breakaway Broadcast Processor might be a better choice for my purposes.
Hopefully other Breakaway Live users (hams like yourself and certainly non-hams) will weigh in with their ideas. I’d like that. I also wish someone would draft some sort of manual/tutorials for this system. Right now, I feel like I’m shooting in the dark.
Have a pleasant Memorial Day weekend,
Don
June 6, 2012 at 6:35 am #13267DrSandiParticipantJust my two bits here. I don’t ham it up. But I use Breakaway on a handful of small NCE FM stations. I use CGSmooth on our Rockin’ Classic Hits format for loudness without fatigue. Not that fatigue is a major issue on the Ham bands.
But the point is that I turn up the "Range" control to deal with the fade at the end of songs going into jingles. I use a range setting of 70. It gets rid of most of the audio fade at the end of tunes, but it brings up the noise behind the newscasts and our pre-recorded jocks.
One thing that helps somewhat is the Noise Reduction control. I’ve sat and watched that thing gating various bands during long talk segments, so I know it’s working.
My only real suggestion here, I guess, is to tweak the Range control for the sweet spot between fan noise and total audio domination.

As per the attached screen shot, all I’m running is a fairly simple in/out config. The input direct from a USB mic and the output to the transceiver via a USB cable.
I notice in Windows 7 sound manager that three Breakaway Pipelines are present. I’ve disabled all three since I don’t know what use they can provide. Should I be using them in some fashion?
I was pleased to not have to enable ASIO as latency is not a problem like it was with several VST hosts that I tried including Kristal Audio Engine.

You may or may not know that this control
also adjusts where the downward expander thresholds are at for a preset. Lower it for less gating, raise it for more gating.June 16, 2012 at 9:29 am #13270RodeoJackMemberHi, DrSandi.
Well, that makes sense. I’ve heard those NCEs you mention. I also use the processor, in conjunction with some of the functions of Stereo Tool at the FM you and I have talked about recently.
I also use the ASIO version for the audio processing on my 3 drive-in movie screens. After trying out 3 or 4 different hard-box processors, BBP has been the best by far.
Good to see you here.
