Howdy!
Breakaway Live 0.90.67 beta is released.
New presets:
Rusticity ’73 and Rusticity ’83 by Jesse G. Jesse describes them as "A union of an old age and of a new." In short, they’re nice oldschool sounding presets, sounding completely unlike any other Breakaway presets.
Twente, by yours truly. Named after a region in the Netherlands where a lot of pirate broadcasters just happen to live, this preset is a good sounding version of Amsterdam. Loud but controlled, much more prominent midrange than for example Plutonium, and no pumping. Check it out — Twente brings another unique sound to Breakaway which wasn’t previously available.
CGSmooth – the great Cornelius Gould does it again, with a great preset for AAA / Americana / Soft Rock!
I hate to say it, but I’ve also had to remove two presets from Live: New York, and Amsterdam.
The reason is that they just didn’t sound good in Live. In BBP, these presets make heavy use of the clipper back-end, but Live uses a completely different low-cpu limiter back-end, which just does not respond nearly as gracefully to constant overload. I discovered this when listening to Adam’s web stream, and got a distinct "my god, what have I done!" feeling.
Hopefully the new presets will more than make up for it. 🙂
I’ve also fixed a couple of config-related bugs. For example, the ASIO back-end is now not initialized until you actually check the ASIO box.
Please test, and enjoy! The first public release of live (0.90.64) was incredibly bug free for a first release. I must be getting the hang of this. 😉

Just tried listening to it: Prince – Purple Rain, there are some serious problems. All garbled and distorted. Time is ~4:00AM EST (Canada). Checked a couple of other online stations to make sure my connection was okay, and everything was good.

That’s awesome man! I’m glad we were able to work through the preset problem. Do you see an issue with adding final drive to any of the louder presets?
And yes, Live was practically a perfect first beta release.

January 12, 2009 at 12:32 pm #6223LeifKeymasterHi Adam!
Yes, I do. Look-ahead limiters cause IM distortion when driven too hard.. Unfortunately, most people aren’t consciously aware of this type of distortion, so they may not readily hear it — but it’s causes listener fatigue regardless, subconsciously.
Really, the best solution can be found in Breakaway Personal — it HAS no final drive control. 🙂 However, for Live, people wouldn’t accept that. So, there aren’t a lot of options, except to warn customers not to try to overdo the loudness with Live. If you’re looking for absolute loudness, Live is the wrong product! However, if it’s OK to be 2dB quieter than BBP (which is really 2dB above the norm for web streaming), you can save both CPU power and latency by using Live.
Best regards,

January 14, 2009 at 2:54 am #6225LeifKeymasterAwesome, lpy!
That must mean you’re still running 0.90.64.. man, that just kicks ass for a first beta 😀.

January 14, 2009 at 3:36 am #6227LeifKeymasterOh, alright. That’s not non-stop, but it does mean that it hasn’t stopped without being asked to — also a good thing.

January 15, 2009 at 6:19 am #6229lumper5MemberBeta 64 never crashed on me. Upgrade to 67 was quick & easy. I like Unca’s presets, but I’m giving CGSmooth a try, but I find I really have to push it HARD to get a sound I like. Still, a good preset. Thanks for updating the client.
My online station has never sounded better.
