Howdy!
Breakaway Broadcast Processor 0.90.67 beta is released.
New presets:
Rusticity ’73 and Rusticity ’83 by Jesse G. Jesse describes them as "A union of an old age and of a new." In short, they’re nice oldschool sounding presets, sounding completely unlike any other Breakaway presets.
Twente, by yours truly. Named after a region in the Netherlands where a lot of pirate broadcasters just happen to live, this preset is a good sounding version of Amsterdam. Loud but controlled, much more prominent midrange than for example Plutonium, and no pumping. Check it out — Twente brings another unique sound to Breakaway which wasn’t previously available.
CGSmooth – the great Cornelius Gould does it again, with a great preset for AAA / Americana / Soft Rock!
Enjoy 🙂.

///LeifJanuary 10, 2009 at 5:08 pm #6230AnonymousGuestHi Leif,
I have some suggestions for adding functionality to your meters in all versions of BA. How about adding peak and valley indicators as well as an average level RMS readout? That would really show numerically how load the signal is over time and help to compare presets better. I have this feature in my Behringer Procurve and think it’s pretty useful.
What do you think?
StuartJanuary 11, 2009 at 2:33 am #6231celarMemberOMG, you got Cornelius on board!!?! I swear, BBP is a who’s-who of processing. Fantastic.
I can hardly wait to see more of his presets integrated into BBP. The CGSlamminCHR and CGSmooth series of Omnia presets are Corny’s finest work.

Best,
///Leif[/quote]Hello ,
The Twente preset sounds good , but i am missing the subbass like the New York preset .January 11, 2009 at 1:40 pm #6234ErwinMemberI like the new presets. Can I use this presets also in older versions of BreakAway? So not, can you make it available?
January 11, 2009 at 1:53 pm #6235LeifKeymasterHi Erwin!
The presets can not be used in older versions of breakaway. There is no reason to use an older version — updates are free! Just install the new one, it will remain registered.

January 11, 2009 at 1:55 pm #6236LeifKeymasterAppie, you can boost the bass with the Bass Boost slider 🙂. Don’t forget to also turn Final Drive down a little bit to make some headroom for the extra bass.

i prefer the New York preset , VERY LOUD and clean .
January 11, 2009 at 5:04 pm #6238AnonymousGuestReally no comments on the meter additions? Even the Omnia has a loudness meter!

January 12, 2009 at 12:38 am #6239LeifKeymasterOK, good point, Stuart 😉. I just didn’t know how to respond yet, was still thinking about it.
The thing is, loudness meters are pretty misleading for radio. Loudness depends on so many things (exciter output gain, lack of peak overshoots), but most importantly — a loudness meter doesn’t tell you how it sounds! It could be extremely distorted, and EQ’ed to be all midrange (to hit the ear where it hurts), the loudness meter would show a nice high value, but who would listen? 🙂
Can you explain to me, what is the utility of having a loudness meter in a radio processor? What would it be used for?

Thanks Leif! For the Broadcast and Live versions, it might not be useful in absolute terms, but I think it would be helpful to gauge relative loudness of various settings and presets. By seeing for example, what the current RMS value of the outgoing signal is, one would know that the New York preset is louder than the reference preset (I am using an extreme example just to make a point). Although it would not indicate sound quality, it would quantify what the loudness is allowing the user to push for the highest level while still maintaining a good listenable sound.
For your personal BA product, in addition to the above, it would drive home to the user, some of what the processor is doing. They don’t have to sit and watch how often the meters hit 0, they can see instantly what average sound level is and readily compare the values observed with the values from other settings. Obviously this is most useful when done using the same source material with the same spectral balance.
It would also just be cool to have it! Who doesn’t like more gadgetry?

January 12, 2009 at 4:41 am #6241sgeirkMemberThere’s a loudness meter in our Omnia 6. I thought it was cool when it shipped with it. I’ve looked at it, but not for any real purpose. I’m with Leif, the only thing that matters is the sound.
January 12, 2009 at 5:46 am #6242LeifKeymasterI tend to think that if they had thought of putting an oscilloscope in (and knew how to write efficient code for one), then they would have done that instead of putting the Dorrough meter in 🙂.
However, I do have to write a loudness measurement algorithm for a different project for Linear Acoustic real soon, so if I can think of a sensible and easy way to put it into Breakaway, I might just do it.
