Hello, i have a Sound Blaster Audigy 2 pci sound card (recently adquiered), as you knowm this card work with 24 bits and a sample rate at 96khz max… Well, when activate the BAE 1.30.02, in the properties of Windows Sounds devices marks the BAE to Work at max with 16 bit and 48 khx resample rate. That´s real ? My sound may be affected (lost quality) respect with BAE and will not? Thnaks in advance for the answer

    Howdy!

Using 44100 or 48000 Hz sampling rate limits the top frequency response to 20 KHz. Luckily for us human beings, that covers our entire hearing range for the vast majority of us!

When I was 9 years old, I heard up to 21 KHz. I’m a little older now (31), and hear up to 18 KHz. How high do you hear? 🙂

24-bit does have definite advantages though, for certain scenarios, and I may add support for it in the future if there’s a real need. However, with any popular music released the last 10 years, it’s pointless — in fact 12 bits would be plenty enough to accurately reproduce todays compressed and distorted masters.

So in short, indeed Breakaway supports 48000 hz 16-bit maximum, but no, you’re not losing any quality from it 🙂.

    Best regards,

Thanks a lot for the answer Leif, but one more question, what do you recommend me, put my soundcard in the 24 bit resolution and 96 Khz or in other mode? (my card manages 16-24 bits and 44.1-96khz resample). Thanks in advance, you are the expert (i think with privileged ears jaja).

If you’re using Breakaway, it’s best to put the sound card in 48 kHz 16-bit mode, to avoid further conversions. Sound Blaster cards (and most on-board solutions) perform well at 48 kHz but not so well at 44.1, which is why the defaults in Breakaway are 44.1 kHz input, 48 kHz output. Most music is 44.1, and Breakaway contains a high quality sample rate converter, for the best possible quality 🙂.

Thanks for your opinion Leif. Put my configuration as you says and sound very sweet. BAE sound great in the onboardsound (Intel HD Audio 7.1) but in my SoundBlaster sounds amazing. I´m very happy now, keep doing your great job Leif and thanks again.

I have a question that has to do with this topic. I have recently been downloading music from HDTracks.com and some of it is available in 96/24. Now if BAE only runs at 48/16 max , is BAE down-converting this audio ? It doesn’t seem to have any problem processing it. Am I wasting my money on this higher quality music or whats the deal ?

    Thank

    Rob
