Last week I posted a question about what might be causing CPU spikes and short-term screen freezes when running Breakaway Live. It’s most evident when I open the preset window and start to hover over or attempt to select a preset.
I discovered the culprit and thought I’d share in case anyone else is experiencing a similar problem: It’s AVG Antivirus, specificically its "Resident Shield" process, which eyeballs files and programs as they open.
This issue seems to be widely known and recognized, and affects plenty of programs from what I’ve learned through some on-line forum research.
There is an "exception" list in AVG in which you can list programs or files that you’d like AVG to ignore, but putting the Breakaway Live .exe on that list hasn’t solved the problem.
If anyone has any suggestions on how to "teach" AVG to better ignore Breakaway Live or has encountered this issue before, I’m all ears.

If it’s being used on a streaming encoder, and thusly, hooked up to the net, then I would suggest you use Sophos over AVG. We use Sophos on our Breakaway Live install and it’s never caused a burp.

I could get away with using BAE, but I’m upgrading to Live because of the incredible PEQ Live offers.
So, yes, I’ll need to keep antivirus software up and running, and will take your suggestion and look into Sophos 🙂
Thank you!

June 29, 2010 at 11:59 pm #10974Dr.JMemberAdditionally, which version of Breakaway Live are you using?
July 6, 2010 at 12:06 am #10975jameskuzmanMemberHi Jesse – Hi Dr.
I’m using version 0.90.77 of Live.
I used Microsoft Process Explorer to track exactly when the spikes were occurring, and what program was running at that very moment.
I confirmed the theory by temporarily bypassing that portion of AVG, and the problem instantly disappeared. Re-enable AVG, and the problem returns.
After a little casual research, it seems this is not an uncommon issue with AVG. What I find really weird, though, is that BAE runs without a hitch. Only Live is affected.
I’m giving Avast! a whirl at the moment, and so far, so good. It’s not interfering with Breakaway at least…

July 6, 2010 at 8:59 am #10976Dr.JMemberThere was an issue with long "pauses" when accessing the preset/settings files of older versions of Breakaway Live. I would highly recommend upgrading to the newest version available here… http://www.claessonedwards.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=1010
July 6, 2010 at 1:16 pm #10977JesseGMemberActually, there’s a v0.90.96b available.
You should be able to reference the "latest versions" topic to always have the latest. Good for when the versions update, and these eventually old topics don’t.
