Leif, I hope your deal with Linear Acoustic pays you on a per-unit basis! If so, congratulations are in order.

The US Senate unanimously passed a bill late Wednesday (9/29/10) to require television stations and cable companies to keep commercials at the same volume as the programming. The House has passed similar legislation, and it looks like the initiative will soon become law.

For anyone who’s wondered if Democrats and Republicans can agree on anything: note that the bill was passed unanimously. How about that, a true bipartisan success.

Hopefully the FCC adopts R128 as soon as possible.

I also can’t wait to show you guys my more advanced version of the short-term meter. I don’t know why, but for some reason everyone seemed to have trouble (?) making one that was gated but not reacting in realtime?

But yeah, I made one that should be at least as accurate to subjective loudness as the gated LU measurement. It responds instantly to audio input, with no perceptible delay at all for both TP (TruePeak) and LU. The short-term LU still of course ultimately having a 3000ms window on it. The gating is what makes it awesome.

Unfortunately because of problems during specifications, they decided to make the short-term meter have NO gate at all. The cool thing about my short-term gated meter is that I didn’t have to add another LFKS measurement hidden underneath besides the 2 required already. All I added was more logic conditions to the gating, to make it respond a lot closer to how the subjective loudness seems to change when the volume drops

I’ll definitely be sharing it, and it’ll definitely be free and cross platform. 8)
