    Leif:

Glad to see that my favorite Winamp Plugin (Octimax) has emerged even better than ever in the form of BreakAway!

Our radio network is in the process of launching four new web streams and I would LOVE to use BreakAway to process them. I was going to use some compellors I had lying around but this beats them hands down in terms of processing. It competes nicely with the Omnia A/X software solution. I really like the fact that this is a standalone application that works with any application.

Would you please contact me offline to discuss the possibility of licensing multiple copies of this software? I know a number of other broadcasters in the Public Broadcasting community here in the US who would also be interested in this software.

I look forward to a ‘broadcaster’ version of the software with more extensive controls and preset management but I like the clean interface of Breakway as is for most purposes that don’t need extensive tweaking. The presets and controls are fairly intuitive and sound good.

One question, however…Can I turn off the scope displays and leave the meters? I can’t seem to find any way to do this…

If I may say so myself… Breakaway completely blows away Omnia A/X. πŸ™‚

re: getting only meters… yeah, it’s too bad the "meters" option doesn’t make that happen more often.

Here’s a screenshot of the smallest size I could find in a few minutes, where it will only show meters, and not the scopes, attached. πŸ™‚

Crap. I just realized that Breakaway won’t do what I want in its current form. I want to process incoming audio and feed it to a web encoder. Apparently this incarnation of Breakaway supports processing OUTPUT only. I could probably find a way around this but I don’t have time for that right now…

    Hi Stoven!

Regarding meters, Jesse is right – It does not directly obey the "Meters/Oscilloscope" switch — it’s more of a priority switch. The layout engine attempts to fill the window size you’ve set as best as it can, and if there’s space remaining, it’ll put the scope in even if you didn’t ask for it.

However, the oscilloscope uses almost no CPU power by itself if it’s small, and it doesn’t hurt anything. Really, it’s not just there for show! It’s a highly accurate instrument, invaluable in getting your audio path set up right, allowing you to see almost any clipping that happened previously in the chain. Once you get used to it, it’s a great tool — I know I couldn’t live without it!

(Incidentially, the oscilloscope is free to use. Even after the 30-day trial period, as long as you don’t unbypass Breakaway, you can use the oscilloscope for free indefinitely without Breakaway bugging you.)

Regarding live processing (sound card input), I’m afraid you’re correct – the personal user version won’t do what you need it to. I had to put a couple of limitations in to be able to sell it to the vast majority of users for $29.95.

However, the webcaster version will be able to.

The webcaster version will have at least one more control (Final Drive) to give the broadcaster control over the absolute loudness vs punch tradeoff. (In the current Breakaway, all presets are roughly the same loudness).

    Stay tuned πŸ™‚.

Thanks, Leif! I realized after posting that many others have already posted to ask for what I am asking for. Guess it pays to read the other posts first… πŸ™‚

I know it’s tough being one guy with so much to do. My assistant and I maintain 24 radio transmitters and the studio facilities by ourselves. Plenty of work even for two guys!

Your work is absolutely brilliant. Keep it up!

    PS:
Did you ever work (or consider working for) Orban or Omnia here in the US?

Both considered and worked, but I’ll let Leif answer that one. 8)

    TouchΓ© πŸ™‚.

    Yes, both.

I initially moved to the states to work for Orban. Stayed there for only 3 months – a coworker suggested we start our own company around my inventions, and Octiv was born. Then Octiv got bought out by PLT, renamed Volume Logic Group, I left, and VLG was shut down. <– strongly abridged version

As for Omnia, they’re in the process of acquiring Linear Acoustic (public information since NAB *last* year), and Linear Acoustic is my biggest client, so I will definitely be seeing a lot of Frank Foti in the future when I visit the states πŸ™‚.

Now Linear Acoustic is a Telos company.
And the next Omnia processor will be AEROMAX-HDFM?

Leif just got back from the states. πŸ™‚ The Linear Acoustic product will most likely stay under the Linear Acoustic brand name – but I can’t speak for Telos, that’s their business.

As far as AEROMAX-HDFM becoming an Omnia product, that’s something that hasn’t happened yet (and may not happen). That’s why Leif is considering releasing it himself as Breakaway-HDFM (exact naming semantics unknown to me, that’s what i’ll word it for now, so don’t quite me on the exact naming convention)

Honestly, again… I can’t speak for Omnia either, but it’s probably something which wouldn’t be smart for them to take on right now, even though they probably could get it to run on the OmniaONE platform, because the quality of the processing is MUCH BETTER than the Omnia6EXi – and undercutting that market for them is probably not an option. πŸ˜‰

If Leif releases Breakaway-HDFM himself, they don’t really have anything to do about that, other than try to compete. But they would be foolish to do it to themselves.

I wanted to do a new post, but this heading summed it up.
I have been looking for a program like this for years !
You have made a guy in Australia, ( and his wife ) very happy. No longer do I ride the volume knob on my remote.
As an MCE user, and now SageTV, Breakaway has solved the most frustrating problem of different volumes on the different channels on my media center box. And the sound still comes out fantastically.
I was dubious how it would work as I run optically from my sound card to reciever, but it handled it just fine.
Thanks again for an awesome, easy to use app.
