I was wondering if you intend to grant users access to the controls under the hood so that we can adjust settings to the individual compressor bands, noise gates (if these exist, haven’t had enough time listening to tell if they are used here), and agc attack/release settings for the purpose of creating our own presets? I know there was a back door in VolumeLogic that allowed this.

Also, I read recently that Apple is opening up the audio portion of its iPhone OS. Are you planning to release a version of Breakaway for it? That would be a killer app. for the iPhone indeed!

    Hi Stuart!

There was indeed a well hidden easter egg in VL for windows that allowed this (although it was never ported to the mac).

We will probably hade a more advanced version in the future (at a more reasonable price for an audio processor of this caliber), but simplifying controls was one of the compromises we had to make to be able to sell Breakaway Personal at $29.95 while maintaining full sound quality.

There are downward expanders, they’re used by certain presets. Next release (coming very shortly) will have more presets that enable them.

Breakaway in the iPhone would be incredible! We’ll see what happens 😉.

    Best regards,

    Leif,

I was wondering if the iPhone has enough processing power,
to run a application like Breakaway.

    Dj Buik, it might.

The breakaway core algorithm itself is highly optimized, and can be slimmed down further to fit inside a smaller space, with minimal audio impact. Also many things that are part of Breakaway Personal (such as adaptive sample rate converters, ocilloscopes) can be omitted for a phone implementation.

If they open up the audio for the iphone for 3rd party applications, would that not be the same audio section that is used in the latest generation ipods? Isn’t the ipod "Touch" model the same as the iphone less the cellular phone module?

A "lite" application of Breakaway that would work in some of the later generations of the ipod with a few presets and the AGC would be a "must have!"

The iphone OS is completely different from the iPod OS’s with the exception of the iTouch which I imagine has a very similar/ almost identical OS. VolumeLogic was successfully installed on an iPod if I recall correctly but was never given the go ahead by Apple. However, if Leif wished, he could possibly implement Breakaway for the Rockbox OS available for iPods…

We never actually got VL into an actual iPod, there was no sense in spending the engineering resources without the business issues taken care of.

Rockbox would be possible from an engineering standpoint, but doesn’t make much sense from a business standpoint.

iPhone / iPod Touch would be great though! If the api makes it possible, we will definitely look into it.

Sorry. I may have confused the iPod with the PortalPlayer it contained at least at the time. The sales person at Octiv told me there was some code that worked on it which served as a proof of concept. It’s been 3 years, so my memory is fuzzy about it. At any rate, I hope it happens for the iPhone and Breakaway!

VERY well hidden – I’ve done some pretty deep searches and have found nothing about said easter egg 🙂 Any suggestions on how one could "discover" it? 🙂
