Morning folks,
All the psycho-acoustic and listener fatigue arguments aside…I’ve been testing now for about 1 month and before I make the jump, I have a need to reproduce the the brickwall-hardknee sound of Eastcoast USA am/fm sound circa 1975-1985. Ya know that DBX 160 sound. Are there tweaks you can recommend and starting with what preset.

Jammin…May 10, 2010 at 8:13 pm #10682JesseGMemberDBX 160A is a pretty gentle compressor even without the OverEasy circuit enabled, in comparison with a brickwall limiter. Unless you modify it.
Anywho if you want a sound like what you’re describing, you might try one of the many Winamp plugins for broadband compression/limiting, or the combination of Adapt-X (winamp plugins to load DirectX plugins) and DirectiXer (turns any VST plugin into a DirectX plugin)
Optionally you could just use the VST directly within Breakaway once that feature is released in an upcoming update. That will really be ideal because then you don’t have to be concerned about headroom/clipping, and won’t have to mess with any of the aforementioned "wrapping" methods. There’s a HUUGE amount of free VST plugins for compression/limiting out there.

2. Both are somehow outdated.Free alternatives:
VB FFX-4 Rack (Winamp DSP, VST and DX Plugin to load DirectX plugins)
http://pagesperso-orange.fr/vb-audio/us … dxrack.htm
It is old, but not outdated.
It’s a vintage must have tool !And Acon EffectChainer (a DirectX and VST capable universal wrapper and multi-effect rack – DX and VST plugin !)
http://www.kvraudio.com/get/2497.html
http://www.acondigital.com/us_Downloads.htmlVery good (classic) limiter, compressor and other free FXs:
Kjaerhus Audio Classic Series
http://www.acoustica.com/plugins/vst-directx.htmPersonally:
I load the VB FFX-4 DSP plugin with Breakaway Live and the Acon EffectChainer (DX plugin) into it (because most of the plugins I use, are VST plugins).
Besides the rack saving/loading capability, especially the mute and solo functionality (VB FFX-4 and Acon Chainer !) is very handy.May 11, 2010 at 4:12 am #10684greatstartMemberThere is a VST plugin that simulates the dbx 160 compressor. It’s called "Major Tom" – http://www.stillwellaudio.com/?page_id=13

There’s also a new 165 simulation out there, just came out…
http://www.delamancha.co.uk/sixtyfive.htm
not sure if I would recommend it since I haven’t tried it, and in the paste their plugins have seemed quite bloated in the memory department… since they use SynthEdit as a framework. so, worth checking out possibly though.I’m sure there’s others, link em if you know em. 🙂
p.s. the two DBX units i would love to see accurately simulated… are the 286A and the 268A. everyone should be familiar with the 286A voice processor by now, but very very few people know what the 268A is, and I have one. 😀 It’s a two band intelligent agc/limiter with bass & treble enhancers… designed by Robert Orban. 8) Sounds dang smooth and transparent too. Now that I’m thinking of it again, it operates a little bit like Breakaway’s current AGC/WB1/2 setup… just with slower AGC and faster WB than most of the Breakaway presets use. All dynamics with OverEasy, of course.
May 12, 2010 at 3:22 pm #10686AnonymousGuestSince everyone suggested something other than Breakaway 😐 …may I suggest Breakaway Broadcast Processor setting of Quintessence with a speed of 75. Wait till you run Safety Dance through it…will remind you of Z-100 in NYC 1984-1985! One of my favorite settings for 60’s, 70’s & 80’s.
Enjoy,
