I know it’s been tossed around in here several times, but I found an awesome company out of Wichita that builds unbloated rackmount servers! CybertronPC (http://www.cybertronpc.com). The best part is that most of the 1U boxes have full-height PCI slots (usually only 1) that allow the addition of a specialized soundcard. Since they build systems that aren’t loaded with 5 gigs of shit, you can get a top-of-the-line rackmount for less than $1,000.
I am looking at building a system right now, and here are the specs from the website:
Quantum XS1020 1U Rackmount Server
• Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 3.00GHz Dual Core Processor
• Asus P5N73-AM Motherboard
• 2048MB (2GB) DDR II 800MHz PC6400 Memory
• (2) 160GB SATA II 7200RPM, 16MB Cache Hard Drives in RAID 1 Configuration
• Slim DVD/CD-RW Combo Drive
• nVidia GeForce 7050 Onboard Video Graphics
• 10/100 Ethernet Network Interface
• 8 Channel High Definition onboard sound
• Ports : (6) USB 2.0 (some by header), (2) PS/2, (1) Serial, (1) Parallel, (1) VGA, (1) Audio I/O Panel, (1) RJ-45
• Open Slots: (1) PCI
• 1U Rackmount Chassis with a 200W Power Supply
• Dimensions (Inches) 17 (W) x 16.5 (D) x 1.73 (H)
• Free Liftetime Technical Support
• 1 Year Warranty on Parts & LaborMay 4, 2010 at 10:16 am #10654BokiMemberNice conf. i Have here e8400 and that’s very good cpu!
one question: Are you shure you can put some soundcard in 1U case?
It’s only possible with some PCI 90 degrees converter. ‘?’
May 4, 2010 at 10:20 am #10655AdamHMemberYep, it has a riser card in it that turns the backplane 90 degrees. I would imagine that the only caveat is the card can’t be too deep.

May 4, 2010 at 3:13 pm #10656JesseGMemberThe board itself has 4 expansion slots actually…
PCI Express x16 1
PCI Express x1 1
PCI Slots 2
Of the two PCI slots, I’m not sure if they handle 3.3v cards, or also 5v cards. I have worked with server mainboards that don’t handle 5v PCI cards, so this originally not being a mainboard designed for server use is a good sign, believe it or not. 🙂Nice price too. 😉
May 4, 2010 at 3:32 pm #10657AdamHMemberThere may be an issue here regarding the width of the card. I have a call into a tech who is on the prod line right now figuring out a way to make it work. I’ll let you know the outcome, but either way, it’s a nice box.
May 4, 2010 at 5:52 pm #10658camcloneMemberI ve tried that kind of setup and i had problems with I N T E R F E R E C N E to the soundcard from all the other ..motherboad modules and coolers..
WHY WHY WHY WHY do u want a so small machine ?
i find this very stupid,
sorry about my opinion BUT these small machines are usefull only to CARS and DATACENTERS.

May 4, 2010 at 9:43 pm #10659AdamHMemberNot sure why you would have interference to the sound card. Did you get a free toaster with that motherboard?
The size and form-factor are relevant because some smaller operations are limited on what they can put in a rack, especially if it’s a shared site or LPFM. Not all of us have the honor of blasting all-Greek, all the time over whatever blowtorch you’re operating. There have also been a couple people who have asked for this config in the forum because not everyone is using Breakaway in terrestrial radio…there are several installs of Breakaway Live in datacenters.
I understand that English is not your first language, but maybe you should consider proof-reading your comments before you hit the ‘Submit’ button. Just because you find this idea ‘stupid’ doesn’t mean that others do, and this wouldn’t be the first time you’ve shot off at the mouth.

May 4, 2010 at 11:12 pm #10660MilkyKeymasterWhilst I would avoid inflammatory adjectives like "stupid", I tend to endorse camclone’s comments. It’s the same reason why I have steadfastly avoided using laptops for DJing – because everything is crammed into a conveniently portable carry case, but at the expense of expandability, cooling and (in some cases) performance.
Sure, if your studio is a lined packing case, go for miniaturisation, but, if you have the space, think BIG.
May 5, 2010 at 3:02 pm #10661camcloneMemberTo be honnest i wanna change the word ‘stupid " with the phrase " less long life lasting " or " more ..trouble making "
calm down.
I agree that you may be lucky and your configuration is 100% stable with clean MPX signal or whatever 🙂
BUT , there are many possibilities that your "small machine " causes troubles to the sound output ( if you use ot for MPX transmittion )
If you have the " space" then ..chose a bigger box 🙂
If not…. then give a try.
May 7, 2010 at 5:12 pm #10662AnonymousGuestI’m just curious with this product:
4U 19” Rack Mount Industrial Computer Chassis with 8.4” TFT LCD
http://www.sg-norco.com/index_files/CCRPC919.htmMy question is, will BBP work on 800 ×600 resolution ?
May 7, 2010 at 7:58 pm #10663yorkie98ParticipantIn 800×600 mode, BBP JUST fits in the screen in it’s default configuration, from the very top of the screen right down to the taskbar, you can of course manipulate the size and shape etc yourself to fill the screen as you see fit but the simple answer to your question is, YES, it does work in 800×600.

May 8, 2010 at 10:39 pm #10665yorkie98ParticipantLoving these 4U cases with the display in. For about $1600, I can make my own (virtual) Hardware unit… I’d say these would be marketable. Hows the genuine hardware box coming along Leif?? 😀
