LOL…you’re correct, you can’t hear bass below 30hz but you can definitely feel it on a high quality monitoring set up. When I compare 20hz to 30hz (low cut) using a good quality VST plug-in on Bessel filter, you definitely notice a difference!
As for the gate…I’ll record you a clip with and without the VST gate in front, for you to hear the difference. 🙂
I must be weird then, because I can hear bass under 20hz quite readily. I have a sub that hits -3db at 18hz too. 🙂 Did I mention I actually shattered one of my windows making the Helix preset this past summer?
@ Bessel, i bet it’s not anywhere near as sharp as Leif’s, so you’re probably hearing more like 45hz to 35hz (just an estimation from experience)
@ recording a clip, cool 8)

in case you need it. the official site is down.JesseGMemberhttp://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php
^ let’s us see what exactly what version CPU you have, not just the brand-name. 😉JesseGMemberI can get BBP running on my Athlon64 3000+ at like 85% CPU…. in efficient mode. XP Pro v2002 edition, SP3… hand optimized. So that’s not really acceptable for production use. For production use under normal environmental conditions, you’ll want to be under 60% load ideally… for everything.

Very very smart. In fact Bell Labs, and later on AT&T, NIST, etc… especially Long Lines stuff… is a particular area of interest of mine from that era. 🙂
[edit]
try this on for size…
JesseG-Weighted Natural Tone Noise.flac
it’s what I would consider to be a natural tone, and it’s roughly the target average signal level for the pre-mastering work I do (and have been getting acclaim from of late).I couldn’t think of a name to call it, so i just made up "JesseG-Weighted" 😛
[/edit]JesseGMember
Jesse,
That preset sounds real good, but it’s missing the high end smear from the composite clipper in the other recording 😀Love your work.
Thanks 🙂
JesseGMemberGuess what Cleiton?!?
I’m working on a preset that already sounds pretty much fanTASTic on Disco, House, etc… called…
Moon & Spoon
8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8)Here’s a tease, I gotta tease ya. 😉
Moon_And_Spoon_Teaser_1.flac
hopefully this gets you hot. 😆This is the latest Breakaway Broadcast, 30hz high-pass, 16khz low-pass, 75uS emphasis… running the latest version of my Moon & Spoon preset. And since you’ll probably ask… the second song is Escort – Love in Indigo (Extended Mix)… PRIME tune.
JesseGMemberIf it’s stability, then don’t bother arguing it with me. I personally kept over 200 XP SP1 machines up for almost 5 years without rebooting, playing & streaming audio for the #1 net-caster online (for 2.5 years running according to Arbitron and Ando)
JesseGMemberHaving talked about this much with Leif, I’ll answer this one… Porting over Breakaway core itself is hard enough as is, as experienced with the decent sized delay in getting Breakaway System ported over to OSX.
The FM back-end would be an order of magnitudes (many many times over) harder to port to PowerPC, mainly because of the EXTREME amount of optimization that had to be done for it to work as well as it does under x86 in the first place.
But from the perspective of cost optimization, an x86 platform running Windows (preferably Server 2003) is the way to go. You can build a 1U box capable of hosting a complete Breakaway package (2 Broadcasts, and 1 Live, plus encoders) for well under a thousand bucks for the hardware… depending on the audio converters you want to use. Obviously the price would go above $1000 if you wanted Apogee on every channel. 😛
JesseGMember
the hands of mastering engineers, and they’d kill for an algorithm like this for mastering
This is so true. I have a version that goes almost all the way to 22.05kHz… it’s absolutely the first real paradox in the loudness war, aka the war of loudness… lol
But yeah, back to subject, Leif was correct in his original statement. About the codec being why that’s happening. I didn’t realize you had never actually looked at an mp3 before, in a spectrogram. 😉
JesseGMemberBut also I think what lpy is wondering about… is why there is signal there at all, since BreakawayFM is low-passed (quite well) at 16kHz.
JesseGMemberAs far as the subject of reinstalling vista. First off, the Vista that Dell sends out is indeed quite customized. It is NOT just a stock OEM dvd.
As a fan of fair use, and since you already own a license for it, is to download an OEM copy of Vista SP1 in whatever flavor of Vista it is that you own… and have a look at this website:
http://www.vlite.net/There’s 1,001 tutorials on how to use that stuff, so… word up yoself.
JesseGMemberYeah, I definitely need to finalize a description for Helix. Thanks for your comments. 🙂
Basically, Helix was designed with the idea of DNA in mind. Solid strident sound at the edges with dynamic yet consistent life in the middle, so that the middle pieces never overpower each other, and fit together just inside of the edges.
JesseGMemberYep, if you check the thread where Leif announced the new version (as release candidate), it mentions that you’re going to have to email support for a new one.
That’s an interesting point you make. The installer or Breakaway itself should detect that you have a key, but that it’s old, and inform you that you need to email support for a new one.
JesseGMemberYep, it’s supposed to do that, when there’s digital silence on the inputs. The reason for this is so that it doesn’t use CPU when it’s not being used. Which will allow you do to things like put Breakaway in bypass, and play a 3D game, without any precious CPU going towards Breakaway.
The GUI of Breakaway can take up anywhere from a little to most of the total CPU that Breakaway uses, mainly depending on what video-card you have (the Breakaway GUI is *HIGHLY* optimized and accelerated by your video-card). Updating just the INPUT and OUTPUT levels metering would only update that small portion of the GUI, and seeing as even though it’s only really a cosmetic thing, I don’t see why Leif couldn’t do it. I’m not sure about how optimized the explorer toolbar one is, but the pixel count is WAY smaller than where most people will have the main Breakaway GUI at (which only updates the pixels it needs to, like i said: highly optimized)
So, that’s the main reason it "freezes" when there’s no input audio. But yes, also… it does have some benefit to keep the same processing "action" frozen too, in case you are only pausing the music, for instance.
There’s also the issue of power conservation, and if Breakaway was running 24/7 it would have an effect on your CPU’s power consumption, some more-so than others. So having Breakaway "freeze" like it does is a very "green" thing to do, don’t you think?
