Sgeirk, have you tried running it at 50us pre-emphasis in the US?

December 15, 2009 at 2:19 am in reply to: Do not underestimate the importance of tilt calibration.. #9200LeifKeymasterI second that, Yorkie. The tilt induced by most sound cards will easily cause 20% overshoot on a tightly controlled competitively processed signal, unless compensated for. That’s A LOT of loudness in a competitive FM-landscape.

LeifKeymasterIndeed. The problem is that the tuner doesn’t have an MPX output!

LeifKeymasterHi Daniel!
Thank you very much for your comments.
Well i was wondering, when listening to a track for an example an harder track with a bassdrum.When theres a gap/break with for an example no bassdrum in the track, then when the bassdrum hits into the track then the first kick is higher, is there a way to change so that them are all equal?
I know what you mean. This is one of the side-effects of real-time processing — the audio processor adjusts continuously to the incoming audio, but cannot know what comes ahead. It depends greatly on the settings used, though, and certain presets do this more than others.
What settings are you using now (preset, and slider settings)?
It may be worthwhile to try different settings, and you could also try reducing the
Speed control. If the compressors do not release (increase volume) as quickly during the break, they won’t have as far to attack (decrease volume) when the kick comes back.The BAE trial (the $29.95 product) lasts for a month, and is completely unlimited during that time.
The BBP and BA Live trials ($199, $129) last forever, and the only trial limitation is that they periodically play a promo jingle. 🙂
Best regards,

LeifKeymaster
One of the more interesting things that I’m able to notice while a/b’ing is that if we were running BBP exclusively on both signals…I’d feel an urge to back OUT of our mic processors. BBP is much more kinder and gentler to voice than it’s processor-in-a-box brethren…and for whatever reason, requires less mic processing.
I second this.. Many other customers seem to have noticed the same thing — as long as you never clip the input, it seems that the less mic processing before Breakaway, the better the mic sounds!

LeifKeymasterWow, that’s a new one 🙂. Nope, there isn’t — the wideband agc by itself would not do a good job at normalizing because of being very slow-acting. I suppose I could make a wideband-only preset if it’s something that would be useful. What would you use it for?
If you want to keep the spectral balance as close to the original as possible, how about trying the Reference Classical or the Reference Low CPU preset?
///Leif
LeifKeymasterCould you post screen shots of your configuration screens?
///LeifLeifKeymasterThe Tivoli is my best recommendation, because of its excellent performance. I have a few friends who have modded other tuners, only to find out they didn’t have flat low frequency response, which is an absolute must.
It’s worth trying, though. If you have an oscilloscope and a known good exciter (BW PLL+ 1w) you can play squarewave on the air and probe the MPX output pin on the tuner IC inside the unit. You can find out which pin from googling the IC model number to find the data sheet. If you probe it and see only a very small amount of tilt, and no curvature, that’s a promising result. Then, just add a buffer amplifier with a high impedance input and low impedance output — a composite video opamp would be ideal.
Mod monitor tuners have MPX tuners too, and they’re usually excellent, but a completely different price range.

Really, without a detailed diagram, I have to chance of understanding your setup.

LeifKeymasterDisabling services in XP should not significantly affect CPU usage. They really don’t consume much unless actively in use. Have you tried low cpu mode?

LeifKeymasterThe power control adjusts the compression ratio, and thus it directly affects consistency. Turning power all the way up will provide *too much* consistency, i.e. equalize things that are really supposed to be different 🙂. The tradeoff is a highly individual thing, I actually don’t have a recommendation except to listen and try it.
It could also be that the preset could use an adjustment. To be honest, I didn’t listen to it much — it’s Jesse’s preset. 🙂
For example, consistency could be improved with more aggressive AGC settings, without significantly affecting the "sound". Thoughts, Jesse?

LeifKeymasterNice catch, guys! You’re absolutely right.
Remind me to do it in a couple of weeks when I’m back home 🙂.
Best,
///LeifLeifKeymasterNice one! I’ve heard good things about MM and it’s been on my list of things to try for years. I guess it’s time!
///Leif
LeifKeymasterI have, feeding mpx straight to the exciter, and George’s instructions sound spot on.
