Indeed that's how a USB microphone works. Essentially the mic illuminates the need for a conventional USB audio interface. Not a good scheme for handling pro audio in the studio but an acceptable alternative for lessor modes such as Amateur Radio and podcasting.
Thanks for your encouragement. I will do as you suggest by customizing existing presets to suit my needs. I had hoped that I might run across someone on this forum that recognizes the potential for BreakawayOne for processing other than purely musical material.
Good to know that Leif has plans for producing a more comprehensive "how to" manual. In the interim, I will continue to closely monitor posts on the forum for tidbits of useful info and lessons learned.
donsnoMemberGood to hear from you Milky…
The microphone is a Rode NT-USB that does not require any pre-processing. Indeed Amateur Radio is restricted to live spoken word in much the same fashion as talk radio. As such, as I indicated in my last post, judicious processing is called for to optimize intelligibility to the receiving station.
I've successfully used Reaper hosted VST plugins, Nectar 2 and Studio One 3 to achieve my processing goals. I'm convinced that BreakawayOne is equally up to the task once I find the right preset. Optionally, I will tweak an existing preset once I have mastered it's rather steep learning curve. Ideally, the developer will soon expand the scope of existing documentation for the benefit of less experienced users.
donsnoMemberHello again…
I thought I'd try again to illicit thoughts and recommendations. What I am looking for is a preset best suited for use in processing spoken word, voice-overs, podcasts, audiobooks and conversational Amateur Radio live transmission which calls for balanced tonality, articulation (clarity) and the right amount of compression/limiting. I had thought that the new "gift of Gab" preset in the latest BreakawayOne update might be just the ticket. Regrettably, it sounds overly processed for my needs. I've attempted to tweak it but to no avail. The "Classical-Jazz" preset comes closest.
Thanks for any thoughts and recommendations you might offer. A "homegrown" preset would be especially welcome.

As per the attached screen shot, all I’m running is a fairly simple in/out config. The input direct from a USB mic and the output to the transceiver via a USB cable.
I notice in Windows 7 sound manager that three Breakaway Pipelines are present. I’ve disabled all three since I don’t know what use they can provide. Should I be using them in some fashion?
I was pleased to not have to enable ASIO as latency is not a problem like it was with several VST hosts that I tried including Kristal Audio Engine.

I elected to go this route simply because my transceiver has a usb virtual com port driver facilitating passage of tx, rx audio and rig control. Really performs well together with a USB mic with minimal drain on the cpu. I am especially pleased to do this with nearly zero latency without the need for ASIO4all.
Not being a DXer or contester, my objective with Breakaway Live tends to favor achieving voice fidelity/clarity rather than enhanced talk power per se. I’ve tried several of the presets. Thus far, I prefer microphone 2, Oldies and Zenith although I’d prefer more high end emphasis. Many of the other presets seem to pick up too much background noise from the radio shack including blower noise from the linear power output amp. Perhaps I should add some sort of noise gate plug although I fear it might deteriorate latency. I have the same concerns about adding a EQ plugin to brighten the high end.
I’ve also read forum posts that indicate that Breakaway Broadcast Processor might be a better choice for my purposes.
Hopefully other Breakaway Live users (hams like yourself and certainly non-hams) will weigh in with their ideas. I’d like that. I also wish someone would draft some sort of manual/tutorials for this system. Right now, I feel like I’m shooting in the dark.
Have a pleasant Memorial Day weekend,
Don
