    Well, according to Apple’s patent "Method and apparatus for automatically normalizing a perceived volume level in a digitally encoded file" the advantage of changing the level of the whole song is that "there are no associated artifacts such as ‘pumping’ caused by dynamically altering gain during playback of a track".

    They’re absolutely right about that (no pumping), and it’s certainly the easiest way to avoid pumping, but it makes also does not do the job.

    Kind of like taking the gas tank out of a car to improve fuel economy. Sure, it’ll work — it’s not gonna use any gas! Mission accomplished.

    Making an algorithm that continuously adjusts the gain (so that it can do the job), yet never audibly pumps, and never gets caught by surprise.. is a little harder.
