Jesse,
Thanks for your reply and input.
That is one way to look at it… but a more elegant solution might be to have accurate (LKFS / ITU BS.1770-1) loudness meters on the input, and have a dialnorm setting for a target input loudness than when changed also compensates the AGC range, the gates hold/freeze levels, and the multiband-expander thresholds. That way you can decide what dialnorm is best for the input, and compensate the whole processor to match it with one "knob".
I know dialnorm is used in our TV area and I know in the TV Post Suites we have the Dolby LM100 Loudness Meters but in most cases I have seen they are monitoring the Lo/Ro of the mix buss or in some 5.1 mixes they are across the Dialogue Group buss.
They are not across the input. That’s the area that confuses me and I am working to sort that confusion out within the resources available to me.
I do see what you’re saying in that you’ll be able to adjust the input level, AGC range, gate hold/freeze levels and the multiband-expander thresholds all with "one knob" but I am not sure how that relates to dialnorm. I’m working to sort out my understanding of it though. 🙂
