Well, I didn’t have the previous beta installer available so installed 1.20.12, the installer for which I had available, rebooted and everything is working as expected. I did have to run the settings wizard and identify my sound card in safe mode, though. But then, perhaps this is expected when running 1.2 under a 64 bit OS?

Version 1.2 did not support kernel streaming in vista or windows 7, so breakaway had to use safe mode in those operating systems.

    1.30.01 is here: http://www.ceaudio.com/beta/breakaway_s … .01_rc.exe

Thnks for the link, Leif. 1.30.0.1 installed overtop of 1.2.x without issue and my sound was crisp and clear after a reboot. I’ll keep monitoring this though and will let you know if the behaviour resurfaces. Hopefully, I’ll be in a position to say "why" as well!

Hmm… the problem I identified earlier has resurfaced. I’ll have to trace the cause, if I am successful I’ll post back here.

Darwin, just a quick question, did you increase the buffer/sample size settings at all and test it, sometimes installing new software makes your cpu work harder and requires a higher buffer setting to run with the same quality.

Thanks for the suggestion – I’ll give it a go. I’ve been running BAE with default settings (medium sized buffer) – if the problem resurfaces I’ll go for a bigger one and see what happens.

I’m running 1.30.01 and have just had the sound go "crackly" again under Windows 7 64-bit, on a Intel Core 2 Duo Centrino notebook, as detailed earlier in this thread. I’m posting mostly to add that I note that with this version installed I still have to run the Wizard in test mode to see my sound card – I know this was necessary in version 1.20.x but thought that with version 1.30.x it wasn’t?

UPDATE: sound went "uncrackly" on its own! But Safe Mode to find my soundcard (SigmaTel High Definition Audio) persists.

I’ve just re-updated to 1.30.02 and still have to run the wizard in safe mode to see my sound card.

Just to add to my note above, my on-board SigmaTel sound card is only visible to Breakaway 1.30.01 and 1.30.02 when I run the Wizard in SafeMode under Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit. Also, the sound intermittently goes "crackly" and I have to re-run the wizard, at which point all is well. I’ve been using Perfect Blend for some time (doubt that that has any relevance, though).

Despite these minor problems, Breakaway is MUST HAVE software on my system.

Very strange — Breakaway now fully supports WaveRT-based Kernel Streaming in Windows Vista and Windows 7, both 32- and 64-bit. I’m unable to reproduce any problems at this point, it works perfectly on every machine I have access to.

The only suggestion I can make is to try a different driver version — if you’re using OEM drivers perhaps try the ones that come with Windows, or vice versa. I have a Dell laptop with Soundmax and Windows 7, and it works great there as well (although it’s 32-bit).

If there’s really no way to make it work without safe mode, please try the expert configuration instead, and try "Wave" instead of DS. Please note that this will be slower (longer delay) but it should at the very least be possible to have it run stable. You might try 1024×8 buffers to start with, and work your way down from there until you find the optimum settings that still play cleanly.

    Best,

Thank you for the suggestions, Leif. I’ll try them and report back later.

I’m back to my original setup (running in Safe Mode). It all works, though I do occasionally have to run the test to get clean sound. Trying the Wave output instead of DS output didn’t work at all – I went all the way up to the largest buffer size (2048) and still had horribly garbled sound. I also played around with drivers, but that didn’t seem to help. The only anomaly I can find is that in Breakaway’s normal configuration settings I have an HP Speakers setting (Speaker/HP), but the notebook is a Gateway and I don’t recall installing any HP or Compaq sound drivers. Additionally, this sound card does NOT show up in my device manager. There’s also an Ati HD Audio Device driver (Ati HD Audio Rear Output) that shows up in the wizard. It’s associated with my Ati graphics card. This device doesn’t work with the Breakaway setup wizard.

See attachments for screen shots in both regular and safe mode.

As I’ve written this, I’ve set up the Speaker/HP "card" in Breakaway using the normal test (ie not in Safe Mode). It passes the tests in Step 1 and Step 2 and I tested it with an mp3 in WMP 12. It’s working fine. I’m going to run this setup and see what happens.

Speaker / HP is probably Speaker or Headphone (HP)… If your video card has HDMI out, it is probably the audio send portion of that.

    😳

Thanks for the explanation – to paraphrase TH Huxely, how stupid of me not to have thought of that!

At any rate, I’ve played back part of a DVD, have streamed video from the net, and have listened to some mp3s, all without drama after setting configuring BAE to use Speaker/HP.

    Cheers,

    Mike

Leif, you kick ass! I just updated and noticed all these lovely new features (noise reduction and templates).

    I love BAE!
