Hi, I’m new here. I like what I read so far.
I will be starting an internet radio station soon. I do not have great knowledge of processing, just want the stream to sound "nice to listen". Format is music from the 80 ‘s (Madonna, Michael Jackson, Prince etc).
1 – Should I use Live Or BBP?
2 – Can I run this on Windows 7, 2 GB internal memory available (radio automation software will be on same PC)?Thanks in advance.

January 4, 2010 at 11:54 pm #9466JesseGMemberPersonally for net radio, I would suggest Live every time. Even without any clipping on decoding of a 128kbps (or+) mp3 stream… you will still be louder than almost everyone else, with a nice sound from one of the louder presets.
Or you can pick a more open preset, and get lots more TSL. 😉
January 6, 2010 at 3:41 pm #9467sneradioMemberBreakaway Live is fine for streaming. I use a slightly tweaked version of the "Reference Classical" preset for my station’s Soft AC format. Stop by my tune-in page for a listen.

Love it. Super clean, dynamic, sounds like no processing at all. And yet no volume knob reaching. Isn’t this what processing is supposed to do? 8)January 13, 2010 at 3:45 pm #9469sneradioMember
…no volume knob reaching. Isn’t this what processing is supposed to do? 8)
Yup! And Leif made it easy to achieve. 🙂January 13, 2010 at 5:04 pm #9470AnonymousGuestHi Guys,
I am looking for new arrangements for my webradio and was wondering what you guys would advise?
Ideally and for organizational reasons I would prefer having my automation software running on a remote / hosted server yet how could I ever use BBP on such a set up?
What is your setup? What automation software are you using? Who do you recommend for hosting your station?
Thanks
Zeb
January 13, 2010 at 5:50 pm #9471sneradioMemberHi Zeb,
I have exactly the setup you are looking for. I use StationPlaylist for automation and Breakaway Live for processing. Both of which run on a dedicated server that I also use for streaming. StationPlaylist can use "plugins" and comes with a streaming encoder. Leif has a plugin called LiveLink which can be used as plugin to link Breakaway Live with the Encoder. Therefore no sound card is necessary. Voila! Automation, processing and stream hosting all in one box! 🙂 I use a company called Fast-Serv. I have had a very good experience with them. Go to http://www.fastserv.com/web/ and find the contact link to inquire about pricing for dedicated servers. You might be able to get a decent server with 25mps bandwidth for $175/month. The only caveat is that you will have to manage the Shoutcast server(s) yourself though Fast-Serv is very helpful getting you set up.January 14, 2010 at 1:22 pm #9472BokiMember175$ is little high price for that server.

Thanks for your input, your setup does sound quite appealing indeed! I had not heard of StationPlaylist! Would this work with BBP as well or is the Livelink plugin only working with Live? I guess so.
Two questions though:
1) What "remote" automation software allows one to mix on 3 decks (players) I am finding that for short jingles (2 seconds or less) it gets messy with only 2 decks (basically dead air following the jingles). Obviously it would have to work with Leif’s products!
2) I am far from being proficient in setting up servers, softwares and select the right encoding for my needs, does anyone know of a company that sets things up based on needs and sepcs?
Thanks!
Zeb

I believe it’ll work with BBP too.1) StationPlaylist should be fine with short jingles. Go ahead and download the demo and see for yourself. The demo is fully functional for six hours per run for 30 days. Way more than enough time to tinker and fiddle to see if it fits your needs.
2) Most stream hosts I know of will do what you ask regarding the streaming, but you can’t install your own software. I’d suggest contacting Fast-Serv because they are very helpful and might be able to help you out. No harm in asking.

Sneradio,
Which version of StationPlaylist have you installed on your server? Creator or Studio?
Many thanks!

January 14, 2010 at 9:14 pm #9477JesseGMemberFrance has about the cheapest, partly because it’s subsidized by their government. 🙂 Imagine that, from maybe the only country with an absolutely vigilant voting process.
Anyways, the current prices to expect for a french dedi is roughly…
30 EU/m for atom on 100 Mbit unmetered
50 EU/m for core2 on 100 Mbit unmetered
100 EU/m for Xeon quad on 2 Gbit unmeteredNot shabby boxes from what I’ve seen from various places too, with 500GB upwards 2TB of storage, on good chipsets, on good networking to big exchanges. And the bandwidth… 😯

Studio is on the server.
Studio is the playout automation. Creator is the music scheduler. -
