I really enjoy Breakaway and use it frequently but for a while I started playing a game that is very demanding of my computer’s performance. To squeeze every vital drop out of my laptop, I closed breakaway (not just bypassed) and used an external sound card.

After a few startups where I closed Breakaway immediately, Breakaway stopped opening as soon as I turned on my computer. This was alright when I was playing the game and would close it before starting the game but, as frequently happens, I have grown tired of the game. Now I would like Breakaway to open when I start my computer and be on the entire time.

Another issue I’m having, one which may not be related to the first, is that as my computer starts a Breakaway error notice appears saying "Error starting audio engine: could not find child process" (or something similar). After clicking "OK" the Breakaway settings screen opens. I do not change any settings and click "Finish" and then I have no trouble launching Breakaway.

My theory is that the computer is ready to start Breakaway once booted before the sound card has activated – thus Breakaway cannot find a sound card until after the settings screen has opened and then decides that something was wrong and terminates the process of starting Breakaway. Is there another explanation of why I’m having the problem or a solution of any kind?

    Hi Bassman!

I believe there are a couple of bugs in the Child Process code – I’m currently in the process of trying to reproduce and find them. I’ve had to set up a machine park with every conceivable OS combination to be able to test this – pain in the neck 🙂.

What operating system are you running (and service pack)?

A temporary workaround (until I fix the problem properly) is to turn off Audio Realtime Priority. This completely disables the child process subsystem, and runs the audio engine in the same process as the user interface.

I’m running Windows Vista Business Edition and everything is up to date.

Turning off Audio Realtime Priority eliminated the Child Process error message but Breakaway still doesn’t open on startup. If I uninstall and reinstall Breakaway will that solve the problem?

Thanks for the response! Breakaway is already a great program and it’s good to hear that you’re working to make it better.

    Hi Bassman!

Reinstalling should definitely fix it. In fact, you don’t even have to uninstall – just install again. That way, it won’t try to remove and reinstall the Pipeline driver, which could require a reboot.

Thanks Leif! That solved my problem! Thanks for the quick responses, too!
