Hi,
I am looking for a bit more background regarding the Rock preset, can anyone explain to me what’s going on here when all settings are defaulted?
Also, which BBP preset do you use for your Rock / Alternative Rock processing?
Thanks
Zeb
December 2, 2009 at 1:17 am #9026sgeirkMemberFor the internet, I prefer plutonium, however, I back off a smidge on virtually all settings. There’s really no need to be THAT FREAKING LOUD on the internet. None. Plutonium does a fantastic job virtually as-is.
For on-air, I still prefer plutonium. I find lowering the bass shape to -15 or -20 and lowering the bass setting a bit, increasing the range to about 60 and decreasing the power and speed to about 38-45…then increasing the final drive to taste (just a smidge)…gets a sound JUST as loud as an Omnia6exi, but noticeably more open.
Bass plugin set to 2 and the slam/clunk plugin set to about 3, too.
Your mileage may vary.
This is for a modern rock/alternative format.

basically a 7 band version of Plutonium, with the flawless midrange from Rusticity, and probably the best transparent AGC settings we came up with so far flawlessly matched with the rest of the preset. slightly less "searing" in the treble than what I was hearing with your Plutonium suggestions, and way more solid midrange without loosing too much of that modern "scoop" profile.
part of the testing on Rustonium was making sure that the input fader could be turned up 20 freaking decibels as fast as you can move the fader without there being ANYTHING noticeably different audibly even while the fader was moving up. and it’ll do it! without riding the audio hard. a TRUE testament to the superiority of Breakaway. DARE you to try that with ANY other processor with a preset even half as open sounding (at default settings this preset is at "reference" loudness). 😉
December 2, 2009 at 9:53 pm #9028sgeirkMemberI’ll give this a whirl. 😛
December 5, 2009 at 8:55 pm #9029sgeirkMemberThis Rustonium preset that Jesse threw up sounds better than my suggestions-hands down.
I hear a sense of bass punch and dynamics being restored to today’s garbage. I’m thoroughly impressed.
December 10, 2009 at 7:51 pm #9030sgeirkMemberI tried that Rustonium preset into an actual FM exciter. It certainly has a more open sound than our Omnia 6, it’s not as squashed. However, it does lack some song-to-song consistency.
Our station plays the occasional Ramones or Clash song from the 70’s/80’s and when they come on, they sound a little thin. However, today’s stuff sounds spot on with that preset…so if you’re exclusively playing stuff from the last 10 years…it’s a home run.

December 11, 2009 at 11:08 pm #9032AnonymousGuestHi,
Thank you guys for your help with this, I have tested both presets you recommended.
Both sound great, though I have a preference for the Plutonium preset (deeper bass and openess), I like the Rustonium although at the specified bass settings it still seem less bassy than the plutonium, is that right?
Leif, to what level would raise the power control on the Rustonium preset to obtain good song to song consistancy?
Finally, I was wondering for a Rock format, what settings would you recommend I use for the Challenger Stereo Enhancer? I’d like to enhance the guitars mostly and maybe some of the oomph of the bass… 😉
Thanks
Zeb
December 12, 2009 at 6:38 am #9033LeifKeymasterThe power control adjusts the compression ratio, and thus it directly affects consistency. Turning power all the way up will provide *too much* consistency, i.e. equalize things that are really supposed to be different 🙂. The tradeoff is a highly individual thing, I actually don’t have a recommendation except to listen and try it.
It could also be that the preset could use an adjustment. To be honest, I didn’t listen to it much — it’s Jesse’s preset. 🙂
For example, consistency could be improved with more aggressive AGC settings, without significantly affecting the "sound". Thoughts, Jesse?

December 13, 2009 at 6:08 pm #9034AnonymousGuestHere is an Italian Radio station, namely Virgin, which tends to have a very open (lots of stereo generation) yet very punchy sound…
http://www.virginradio.it/top/webradio/ … Radio%20FM
Not sure whether this is their FM processing or if they have a separate process for their online stream…
Any idea how to get close to this?
Thanks

Turning up the power would be fine of course. In the multiband – Rustonium doesn’t have nearly as much ratio as Plutonium has. So turning up the power in Rustonium will be more balanced change between AGC and multiband.
And of course the bass is easy to turn up. Between those settings pictures… Rustonium has a more musical bass, and Plutonium has a more deep bass thud.
December 15, 2009 at 12:06 am #9037xinetdMemberHow much ratio have at 90 or 100% power?
