Leif,
After MUCH consideration of this issue, and after reading the topic "Bass Kick Distortion", I believe it would be appropriate to ask for individual control over attack and release speeds. Here is my reasoning:
I’ve been using Breakaway Live since the beginning of this year – full-time on 2 streams, and of course, in testing with multiple formats of music on a continuous basis. I’ve tried every preset, under every possible setting to find out what sounds best, and I’ve really only found a problem with one thing.
In order to prevent Breakaway from working behind the dynamics curve on CHR and rock music (with regards to attack), the Speed slider needs to be tuned to around 65-70. This ensures that the attack is fast enough to reign in sudden bursts of sound without creating the rollercoaster effect. However, this Speed setting causes the release to act too aggressively. It is especially apparent that the release is raising the volume too quickly because it causes pregnant pauses in talk radio and pumping in some commercial material. The release speed is much more pleasing when Speed is at 50, but then the attack suffers.
So how ’bout creating separate "Attack" and "Release" speed sliders? I’m thinking back to StreamSolo, which, if I remember correctly, had a similar setting in the first tab of options. I think it had two separate speed settings for decoupled audio, but in this case, one pair of attack and release sliders should be fine.
Please consider this, as it would create a lot of flexibility with the current presets.
Thanks,

I never tried running with Speed as high as 65 – 70, and now I’m curious to try it and see if it tames the bass on a few bottom-heavy songs where I noticed a problem. If it does, I’ll listen for a while and try to hear the associated release problems you mentioned too.

It’s unlikely that any extra controls will happen.November 5, 2009 at 7:21 pm #8896Lee XSMemberMaybe if you guys upload some samples of the "problems" you are describing then we could possibly try to design a "fast attack" preset that you are happy with? 🙂

Hey Lee, I know that are in possession of +, so why not try setting the Rock and Plutonium preset up so that it maintains the same attack speed when the slider is at 70, but back the release down? In fact, the attack speeds on those 2 presets should stay superfast no matter what the Speed slider is set to. Just allow the release speed to be determined by the slider. That would eliminate the need for separate controls!

November 6, 2009 at 12:31 am #8898LeifKeymasterAdam, I have actually thought about this — perhaps 1 slider for the AGC speed, and 2 for multiband attack/release. However, the way my schedule is looking the next few months, it’s too early to even think about it. Adding controls is not just a cost vs value or support issue, it’s also very tricky to implement. New controls in the main window is very complicated, as it means the whole layout engine must be tweaked. New controls in the settings window would be easy, but it would also mean the preset controls would no longer all be in one place — a disaster for usability, so it’s not really an option for this type of setting.
Hey, this may actually call for another preset, or perhaps call for a modification to the Rock preset. There’s still a couple of weak ones in the lineup which could be removed to make room for new and improved presets.
I have yet to experience what you mention as a problem, but that probably just means that my ears aren’t attuned to this sort of issue yet. My ears get increasingly critical every day (it’s a curse), so if you have some audio clips where this happens, I’d be happy to check it out.

November 7, 2009 at 10:21 am #8899JesseGMemberAdamH, I have my first genre specific preset just about done, very stabilized in the last few months, which will probably find its way into the next round of releases. Oh, and the genre is Rock. 8) It’s called Motor City.
Co-incidentally it has slow attacks and even slower releases. Nice & punchy, yet still manages to eat massive transient jumps in volume. Contradiction, I know.
